Its goal will be a voluntary pledge by every citizen here to de vote a set amount of his earnings to the purchase of war savings bonds. A quota of $185,700 in war bond purchases for the month of May has been set for the county by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr. The May quota is an increase of $50,000 over the average month ly sale of bonds here from last July through January. Rabbi M. M. Thurman will in troduce the campaign with an ad dress over Radio Station WMFD at 10:30 o’clock this morning. Mrs. Spencer said that the city had been divided into 18 zones with one organization responsible for the canvass of each zone. Headquarters for the drive have been set up at 7 North Front street. “The women of Wilmington have a big job to do and, being accus tomed to big jobs, they will put this one over successfully,” Mrs. Spencer declared at a meeting of canvassers held in the Sorosis building Friday. “A war cannot be waged without money and it is up to each can vasser to see that every citizen has an opportunity to do his part.” In outlining the duties of the canvassers, Richard Rogers ex plained the importance of a thor ough drive to give the Treasury department an accurate estimate ef the amount of funds that can be expected from bond sales dur ing the remainder of the year. Mrs. Spencer made public the following telegram, received from th secretary of the treasury by C. H. Robertson, state administra tor of the war savings staff: “The whole country will be watching our quota drive in May. It is the first big chance for the war savings committee, with a tan gible objective, to show their met lte. Fulfillment of our May quota, will not only stiffen the morale of the workers engaged in our own important task but will give cour age to all other phases of the war effort. Please convey this message to your key city and county chairmen and after consul tation with them, wire me direct if we can count on your state for this accomplishment in May. Henry Morgenthau, Jr.” The 18 zones for the drive and the organization in charge of each are as follows: z.one l, Cornelius Harnett school: Zone 2.
