TJUJBMIkN'S 16 S. Front St. T RENOVATION WORK STARTEE Some Diifficulty Being Ex perienced In Securing Materials Work on renovating the Y.M.C.A. building began this week, revealed J. B. Huntington yesterday, and aside from the difficulty of se curing materials, the work is pro gressing well. Refinishing the lobby of the structure is now underway and when completed, the room will I have a new tile-tex floor, complete repainting of walls and fixtures, and several portions of the space are being moved around to make a larger area, he said. The Y.M.C.A. officials do not expect a complete shortage of ma terials, he pointed out, but it is possible that the priorities ratings may prevent a speedy completion. As soon as the lobby is finished, the remainder of the renovation will be carried out in the base ment of the building.New all tile shower baths are to be installed and the locker rooms will be re modeled. An exercise room will be added to the basement and the “Y” Health club will have its own set of rooms in the front of the building. Everything will be up to date and modern, Mr. Huntington de clared, and as soon as possible, more work of remodeling will be started. The funds for the remodeling were made available through a special campaign which was con ducted during the winter. While the goal set by the workers was not realized, a large sum was raised and it has enabled the re novation to get started, Mr. Hunt ington said. Very Important! Although the school has been toppling records for several weeks in the number of students gradu ating, the “leveling off” process is just beginning. In July the num ber of graduates will reach 340 a week and from then on will stay close to that figure. By maintaining the 340-a-week average, the establishment will meet its quota of 17,680 graduates a year, a staggering figure but one which is none too high when it is considered that the anti-air craft command is expanding on a scale probably exceeded only by the Army Air Corps. Today is probably the last “black Friday” on the Officer Can didate school graduate calendar for months to come. No class is scheduled to get commissions to day, but Friday after Friday dur ing the coming year hundreds of students will receive their commis COUNTY WILL HAVE ‘DUAL LANF ROAD Thoroughfare To Stretch From Shipyard To Caro lina Beach Highway New Hanover county will soon have a modern “dual-lane” high way, totalling an overall width of 74 feet, which will run from the North Carolina Shipbuilding com pany to the Carolina Beach road, it was learned yesterday from T. T. Betts, division highway engineer Construction of the highway is now going on, he revealed, and is being handled by the F. D. Cline construction company. Work started about two weeks ago and the highway is expected to be com. pleted sometime during the sum mer months. Present plans tor tne construc tion of the super highway allow for it to end at the intersection of the Carolina Beach thoroughfare. But, said Mr.Betts, the grading of the road whch will continue from that intersection into Winter Park will be of a width sufficient to al low for the “dual-lane” highway. The new highway will be con structed along the lines of the existing road from Fayetteville in to Fort Bragg. A 22-foot asphalt lane, separated by a 30-foot strip of grass, and another 22-foot as phalt drive will comprise the 77 foot w.ide thoroughfare. The highway, when completed, will run in a straight line from the shipyards, by the trailer camp and will intersect the Carolina Beach highway at a point near the N.Y.A. training center. From there, it will continue in a straight line through the woods behind Greenfield Lake and will intersect the existing Greenfield W i n t er Park road at a curve about one half-mile from Winter Park. Under present plans, this sectioon of the highway will be only “one lane”, asphalt paving, but it is possible that it will also be made into a “dual lane” tjme before completion, Mr. Betts said. No work has commenced on the “cut-off” between McCumber’s sta tion at Wrightsville sound and the Six Mile post on Highway 17. The present construction of highways in this area is limited to the Ship yard-Winter Park road. For Representative Of All The People In New Hanover County ELECT Clayton C. Holmes As your duly chosen representa tive I would conduct Open Forum Meetings in the Court House or other public meeting place on Saturday Nights or as often as necessary to fully discuss all the bills Involving your welfare. VOUK APPROVAL OF MV CANDIDACV WILL BENEFIT VOU sions as second lieutenants in the Coast Artillery Corps. Following are the estimates of the number of graduates weekly from May 20 to July 31, inclusive: May 29, 200; June 5, 200; June 12, 200; June 19, 260; June 26, 260; July 3 ,268; July 10, 260; July 17, 260; July 24; 340; July 31, 340. Ability of the school staff to expand instructional facilities so rapidly and efficiently following the entry of this country into the war has been noteworthy. Of prime importance was the fact that plans for expansion had been carefully drafted before they were actually needed. SUPER OPEN AIR CURB MARKET 24-HOUR SERVICE 4th and Chestnut Sts. PRODUCE DEPT.
