Smith, assistant executive secretary of the Nation al Council of Catholic Men, said today. At the same session of a four day family life conference at the Catholic University of America, the Rev. Timothy J. Mulvey, pro fessor of homilectics and English, called upon the American radio in dustry to "recognize the place God deserves on the radio log of Amer ican broadcasting.” Smith contended the press should "soft-pedal or give a dif ferent slant to, or even omit en tirely, certain of the more lurid news items connected with di vorce. illicit romances, sex crimes and the like.” He also asserted that too many comics were feeding and teaching children “ideas of violence, crime and even lust.” Advertisements which “appeal to the reader’s lower nature,” Smith said, include "lewd descrip tions of women's undergarments.” He added: “I am thinking particularly of the advertisements for perfume, the whole aim of which, it would appear, is to lead the wearer into circumstances where she can be more easily seduced.” GAS SHORTAGE REACHES AREA The eastern North Carolina gasoline shortage reached Wil mington yesterday with several dealers reporting that their service station tanks have been empty since Monday. Others revealed they were aware of the shortage but were “lucky enough to still have some on hand.’’ Reports were received this morning that motorists from several eastern communities had been here seeking gaso line. Officials of the Gulf bulk plant disclosed that they had been without gasoline for two days but were expecting some today. • A representative of the Shell Oil company reported that, al though the shortage did exist, gasoline still was available at all of the company’s stations. A new period will open to day and another quota of gaso line will be released, he ex plained, which should allevi ate any shortage caused by un usually heavy demands during the last quota period. One bulk plant operator esti mated that under this alloca tion system he was getting only 33 per cent of his normal requirements. An official of the MacMillan and Cameron Co. said that there seemed to be a very definite shortage in the coastal region of the State and that enough barges could not get into Wilmington to supply the seaboard. _\T_ CZECHS ACCEPT WARSAW POLES LONDON, Jan. 31 —(/»— The Czechoslovak government-in-exile formally recognized the Polish gov ernment of Warsaw today, but did not break off diplomatic relations with the exiled Polish government in London. “We simply recognize the legal and political fact of a provisional government sitting in the ruins of Warsaw,” a Czechoslovak spokes man said. “We have nothing against the London Polish govern ment.” Recognition of the Warsaw Poles was believed to have been prompt ed by the impending departure of President Eduard Benes of the Czechoslovak government and members of his cabinet for the homeland to take over the parts of Czechoslovakia already liberat ed. A spokesman for the London Po lish government said the Poles had not been informed officially of the Czechoslovak move but expressed suprise at “the apparent Czech view that they can recognize two governments at the same time.” Benes’ Czechoslovak spokesman said there had been no pressure from any side to persuade his gov ernment to recognize the War saw Poles. He said hundreds of thousands of Czechs had been de ported to Poland by the Germans for work in Polish industrial areas. -V NINE SOUTHEASTERN SOLDIERS REPORTED WOUNDED IN ACTION — The War Department made pub-; lie yesterday the names of nine southeastern North Carolina sol diers wounded in action in the Eu ropean area. This the 24th day of January, 1945 MARSDEN BELLAMY, Commissioner PERSIAN COMMAND TO BE LIQUIDATED TEHRAN, Iran, Jan. 27.—(De layed)—>.T>—Liquidation of the Per sian gulf command as a result of the opening of a shorter Allied sup ply line through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea to Russia has begun, but American troops and influence are likely to remain in Iran for some time. The revision, which will “streamline organization and re duce overseas personnel require ments,” calls for immediate dis solution of mountain and desert units and consolidation of the Gulf district with the Khorramshahr port unit, was officially announc ed. Railroad camps along the Trans Iranian route have been transfer red to the jurisdiction of the Amer ican unit to leave Iran. The program for American with drawal from the once-vital lifeline to Russia was worked out a year ago on Army sliderules, for im plementation as soon as the emer gency route through the Persian corridor was by-passed by Allied victories. Even before the first Al lied convoy steamed from the Med iterranean through the Dardanel les and the Black Sea, the Persian Gulf Command was streamlining its organization. Motor transport service across Iran from Gulf ports, never more than an emergency auxiliary for railway transport, was abandoned about two months ago. The only remaining truck oper ations are the one-way trips to Russia by vehicles assembled in the large American plant at Khor ramshahr, where the U. S. Army supervises the assembly by Per sian mechanics, who comprise 90 per cent of the personnel. A smaller assembly plant at An dimeshk, one of four established originally in the British-American program of aid to Russia, has been shipped to Russia. The dis position of the remaining assembly plant at Khorramshahr will be de cided in the near future. -- V - Humphrey Bogart Admits ‘Signifying Intention s’ Toward New Leading Lady NEW YORK, Jan. 31—UP)—Film Actor Humphrey Bogart said today he had ‘‘signified my intentions” toward Lauren Becall, his new leading lady, although he said he was ‘‘not exactly” engaged to her.
