(International)' Argentina Set To Decide On War Against The Axis WASHINGTON, March 19.—<A>1— The Argentine government is slat ed to decide tomorrow whether to declare war at once on both Ger many and Japan. President Edelmior Farrell, ac cording to diplomatic informants here, has called a Cabinet meet ing at which the critical question of ringing Argentina’s foreign pol icies into line with those of the other American nations will come up. There was no definite assurance that war would be declared. It is understood that some persons pow erful in the country favor a decla ration against . Japan but not against Germany. On the other hand, analysis of press comment and other indica tions of public reaction to the In ter-American Conference at Mexi co City have been favorable to ac tion against both countries. The big question in other Amer ican capitals has been whether Ihe present Argentine administration, which has been diplomatically iso lated by the other Americas for many months, could bring about such a radical change in its for eign policy as a declaration of war would require. There is specula tion that if the declaration is made there may be some changes in government personnel, although the discussions here do not extend on the record at least to what per sons might be involved. A declaration of war against both Axis countries is understood to be the first important step that Ar gentina would have to take in or der to re-enter the American fam ly of nations. British Held Preparing To Clear Burma Of Japs MANDALAY, March 19.-(U.R) The British 20th Division today fought through ideal tank country toward the railway town of Ky aukse, 52 miles south of Mandalay, in what appeared to be the start of the decisive battle to end all Japanese resistance in Burma. Most Japanese in Burma-esti mated at 50,000-were trapped be tween British armored columns nearing Kyaukse and others oper ating in the Meiktila area 55 miles further south. Small pockets re main in Mandalay and in the Hsi paw area 90 airline miles to the northeast on the Mandalay-Lshio road. Three American B-25 Mitchells dropped 2,000-pound bombs on the north wall of Fort Dufferin in Mandalay where the enemy is mak ing a suicide stand against the 19th Indian Division. Elements of the British Second and 20th Divisions drove into Mandalay’s outskirts. The Japanese, who invariably counter-attack when their end is near, made one yesterday at- the southeastern edge of Mandalay with some artillery support. They were quickly thrown back. These Japanese nests in south Mandalay were the only resistance left in the city putside Fort Dufferin. It was believed that practically all Japanese from north and cen tral Burma were pocketed between Meiktila and Kyaukse, or had moved toward the Shan. states to the east-a region of almost im pentrable, thickly-matted jungles and towering peaks. The main forces of the 20th Di vision approaching Kyaukse were meeting with stronger opposition, and it was officially stated that heavy fighting was expected. Brit ish armor south of Kyaukse carried out wide sweeps, killing hundreds of Japanese and capturing more artillery and anti-tank guns. •-V-— Washington Calling (Continued from Page Four) • fering of American supplies is ser ious. Unfortunately, here as in France, some Americans in uni form have participated in looting and in rackets which extend into the upper reaches of the black market. Those who have followed the progress of the liberation from the beginning say there are geo graphical variations in the re actions of the Italians. In Florence, for example, something of the pride of northern Italy enter* in. One curiam example of differing reactions is cited. Currently, one of the most popular of the old films that were barred in Fascist. Italy is Charlie Chaplin’s "The Great Dictator,” with Jack Oakie’s broad take-off of Mussolini. In Naples, audiences almost literally roll on the floor with' laughter. But in Florence, in the north, they weep in shame at the thought that they ever suspended their freedom to such a gross caricature of the hum an being, Mussolini. Italy today is a museum of the horrors of Fascism. No worse pun ishment could be devised for Mus solini, who now hides behind Hit ler, than to bring him back to see the plight of the people he de bauched and deceived. The liberation of the north may be long in coming. There are many who believe that organized resist ance by the Germans will per ist in Italy even after it has end ed elsewhere. And Italy’s ordeal will only just have begun when the entire country is finally freed. The recent escape of General Roatta, former chief of staff under the Fascist regime, and the vio lence that followed are evidence, on the one hand, of the weakness of the government and on the oth er, of the unrest that is close be neath the surface of the country. The government could not cope with the situation but for the presenct of Allied troops. -V CHARLOTTE SPOT CHARLOTTE, March 19.—(yP) Spot cotton 21.60. -V Mexican mythology says the ca cao plant was airborne into Mexi co by Quetzalcoatl, God of the Air. .
