SLUMPlS OFFSET BY TE BUYING NEW YORK, March 19.—'AT— Stocks broke sharply around mid day in today's market but sup port enabled most leaders to re duce or cancel losses of fractions to more than 3 points. There was a smattering of plus marks at the close although de clines were well in the majority. It was the first million-share turn over since March 9. Transfers tot alled 1.070.000 shares compared with 880,000 last Friday. The Associated Press 60-stock composite was off .4 of a point at 61.5, widest dip since March 9. Of 919 issues registering, 580 were down, 188 up and 151 unchanged. Bonds were mixed. Cotton was 10 to 35 cents a bale higher. Improved in the Curb were Ray theon, North American Light, Fansteel and Dayton Rubber. Lower were ARO Equipment, Cities Service, and Cuban Atlantic Sugar. The aggregate here was 360,000 shares versus 260,000 in the previous full session. Negro Officer Wins DSC For Heroism In Germany BATTLE CREEK. Mich., March 19.—VP)—1The War Department an nounced here today award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Capt. Charles L. Thomas, 24-year old Detroit Negro, for heroism in a Siegfried Line battle. Capf. Thomas was the second Negro in this war to receive the honor, the Army's second highest. The first was Pvt. George Watson of Birmingham. Ala., who was killed in New Guinea and received the decoration posthumously. Capt. Thomas is recovering in Percy Jones Army hospital here from battle wounds. -V ARAB GROUP MEETS CAIRO. Norwegian Patriots Stop Nazi Troop Movements By Wrecking Railway Lines LONDON, March 19. — M) — Hundreds of Norwegian patriots striking simultaneously last Wed nesday night in one of the greatest sabotage blows of the war, have brought German troop movements from Norway to Germany to a “dead stop.” the Norwegian gov ernment announced tonight. By wrecking railways and bridg es connecting Oslo with southern embarkation ports, upward of 200, 000 Germans, most of them con centrated north of Oslo and the vicinity of the capital, have been isolated, the government assert ed. Every rail line connecting Oslo with the embarkation ports has been cut so effectively that “it is unlikely they can be repaired for weeks,” a spokesman said. Peruvian Group Fails In Revolutionary Coup LIMA, Peru, March 19. — Ml — Two non-commissioned officers and a small group of men attempted to seize Air Minister Gen. Fernando Melgar at Ancon airbase yesterday in a revolutionary coup, but were quickly arrested, the Peruvian gov ernment announced today. Melgar. spending the weekend at the base. 25 miles north of Lima, “reestablished discipline” with the aid of other officers, and “com plete tranquility prevails in Lima and throughout the entire country,” the bulletin added. The lenders of the revolt had been in touch with the illegal “Aprista faction” which was “at tempting without success to under mine the discipline of the armed forces,” the government declared.
