Whenever information is compiled on a group cross -section the re alization is as plain as a neon sign at midnight. The public relations office at Camp Davis circulates a questionairre form to give back ground information for news to a soldier’s home town. The most in teresting blank on the form is the one headed “Civilian Occupation Thomas Ford was an “Air Con ductor’ in a coal mine, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Perhaps they have underground balloons after all. Robert G. Martin, Plymouth, Mich, simply put down ‘body man’. The address of his employer, a garage in Plymouth, quickly ban ished illusions of a brawny physi cal culturist or a proprietor of a cadaver market. (See what a sen sitive imagination can do). Mil ford Badger was a sole cutter. The spelling saved the day. *Tin-fiSh erman” Stephen Beres, was a wire inspector in a torpedo net manu facturing plant. Currently not at all bothered by threatened unem ployment is Mike M. Bicalo who made his civilian living as a Jock ey. Pfc. Henry S. Runice spotlighted his name when he filled in “forg ing”. Closer examination revealed ‘Chicago’ proceeding the question able occupation and ‘Company’ fol lowing. None-the-less first impres sion pictured a candle stuck in a wine bottle, a dingy cellar and an eye - shaded character tracing samples. But among all the forms there appeared a man who has probably seen more parties than a head wait er, and has seen more prolonged ‘good nights’ at dim doorsteps than a movie director. A man should not mind early morning revel lies at all, Sgt. Arne A. Wanhatalo who bluntly listed his civilian oc cupation as “Milkman.” Changsuichen Retaken In Chinese Offensive CHUNGKING, April 10—Ml—!The Chinese high command said tonight that counter-attacking Chinese troops had recaptured the western Honan province town of Changsui chen, 70 miles from the Shensi border. “The enemy remnants fled to ward Lining with our forces in hot pursuit,” the communique said. The high command acknowledg ed that Japanese forces had en tered Lachokow, former site of an -—— advanced U. S. air base 200 miles northwest of Hankow, and said the Chinese garrison was battling the invaders within the city. On th-s southern Honan front in the Neisiang area, 190 miles north west of Hankow, the communique sajd heavy fighting was in pro gress with no change in the po sitions of the two forces. East of the vital Peiping-Hankow railroad, the high command said, Chinese troops captured the north and west passes to Junan, 130 miles north and slightly east of Hankow. Street fighting was reported raging in Junan, with the Japanese bitter ly defending the town house by house. Other Chinese troops were report ed pressing on Chowkiakow, a Yel low river town 30 miles northeast of Junan. The high command said Chinese troops had breached Japanese lines at several places in the vicinity of Nanyang, 170 miles northwest of Hankow and had wiped out 300 counterattacking Japanese troops. PARKlEPARTMENT FELLS 64 TREES Sixty-four trees were eut within the city last month, according to the monthly report of R. W. Snell, park superintendent, who pointed out that the tress were either con demned because of decay or they were considered detrimental to side walks and sewers or in the way of new construction. It was pointed out by the park superintendent that 3,710 azalea* and 85 camellias were transplant ed from pots and laid out for fur ther development before planting in permanent locations. The report showed that approx imately 1,055 azaleas were dug from the nursery under the super, vision of the PaVk Department for use at the Bluethenthal Army Air Base. The second largest phase of th* department’s work last month en volved the mowing, needing and watering of the City’s parks. It was pointed out that the en tire developed part of Greenfield Park was mowed once last month and the plazas within the City were mowed at least twice. Fifty large hedge bushes wer* planted for screening purposes near the deer lot at Greenfield Park. Forty - two shrubs wer* planted at the fire station at Sev enteenth and Dock streets. More than 700 cannas were planted in plazas on Third and on Fifth streets and several flats of an. nual flower seed has been start ed in the City's greenhouse.
