New Abattoir Scheduled For New Hanover County In the next two or three months an approved privately owned and operated slaughter house is expect ed to be established in New Han over county on the Castle Haynes road on the bank of St. George creek, according to County Health Officer A. H. Elliot. The abattoir will be built under sanitation requirements, Elliot said, and will be subject to in spection by both the State and lo cal Boards of Health. At present there are no approved slaughter houses in the county, and most killing of meat is done by non approved operators, who have temporary OPA permits, but do not meet the sanitation require ments, he added. Present non-approved slaughter houses will be notified within the next few days that they must meet the minimum requirements, butch er beef through the approved abat toir, or discontinue operation, El liot said. The health officer said that it was brought out at the meeting yesterday of the Board of Health that there are two new positions in that department to be filled. One of the positions is that of assistant supervisor of nurses. Over a period of years there has been a considerable increase in the size of the nursing staff, ac cording to Elliot, which necessi tates acquiring such a worker. The other opening is for a laboratory technician at the water plant to relieve the sanitary engineer for direction of the work of sanitary inspectors. Those interested should apply at the Board of Health. The Health Department budget was discussed, and is to be acted on in June. It will call for raises of Health Department employes on the same basis as other city and county employes, Elliot said, -V-. And derson, D., N. M., of the House Food Committee, said tonight. OPA investigators confiscated the spurious coupons from three meat whblesalers and two retail ers who apparently were holding them as a cover-up for business transactions, Anderson declared. Birkett Williams, OPA adminis trator for the Cleveland district, reported the seizure, Anderson said. He added that “our commit tee is convinced that an inquiry into the meat supply source of these counterfeit coupon holders, will reveal black market slaugh tering “This gives a' clue to the black market and a follow through of the investigation should yield the pattern of illicit meat dealings throughout the country.” He said that Williams reported he will suspend all operators where evidence shows black mar ket trading. Williams filed injunctions against 20 slaughterers during April in an effort to force them to keep records of their transac tions, Anderson said. The wholesalers and retailers from whom the spurious coupons were taken apparently bought their meat from, black market slaughterers, who* attracted suspi cion when they mushroomed dur ing the present meat scarcity, he explained.
