MARSDEN BFT LAMY, Commissioner CLASSIFIED DISPLAY VETERANS RIGHTS STILL SHADOWED WASHINGTON, Aug. 28.-(if) —Wha^ job rights are guaranteed veterans? Not even the Justice department can say. A department spokesman ae knowledged th s today. Asked by a reporter lor an in terpretation ol the job guarantee sections ol the Selective Service act, the spokesman replied that the law is so "ambiguous" the de partment has no interpretation. But he added the department hopes that: 1. Co ngr ess will clarify ill meaning, or 2. Fa.ling that, the courts soon will rule on the question. Five suits have been filed in federal courts, but no decisions yet have been handed down. All three major veterans organ* izations — the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans— also agree that congress should rephrase the law to make ita meaning clear. This is the problem: The Selective Service act says that everyone who had a perma* nent job when he was inducted in to the Army can have it back if he asks for it within 90 days after discharge. It sounds simple, but veteran* organization leaders note that it leaves unanswered such question* as: 1. Just how does a temporary job vary from a permanent one? 2. If a worker is drafted and so is the one who took his place, do both get jobs when they come back? 3. A veteran gets his job back but the company has to cut its number of employes, who gets fired? If while a veteran is away his company cut its forces so much that he would have been laid off • even had he not been drafted—is he still entitled to a job? Selective Service has one set of answers to these questions, the Department of Labor another and veterans organizations still an other. ATTORNEYS PLAN INSANITY PLEA COLUMBIA, S.
