ORRELL, County Auditor Over The Airways -By BEN McDonald The evolution of radio will always remain a bright page in the history books of science. And the record has been significantly brilliant during the past four years when im provements and developments were advanced at a faster rate than normal. Among the outstanding achievements is FM (frequency modulation) which has received consider able publicity from the manufacturers who promise delivery of the new post war FM sets in the not too distant future. To the average listener, whose set is in many cases held together by “spit and by gorry”, the thought of being able to purcnase any Kina o a set comes like manna fron the production line. But th hope that FM might be on thi shelves of the dealers seem almost too good to be true For an FM set is the definite goal of the majority of pur chasers when and i^And wel it might be for FM offers the ultimate in reception-so vastlj superior to the standard se now in use that one will won der why they ever though the present method was radii Utopia. However there are many whi still say “what the heck is F1V anyway and how does it differ fron the present AM broadcasting.’ Space limitation forbids a com plete technical description ant who really wants that any'how so briefly here is the way it op erates. FM is broadcasting or what is called a straight line beam In other words it . cpmes direc from the station to thfe home re ceiyer on a band wavejmuch larg er than the present cycle'. Thi band car. carry the hill progran without loss of the pftwer whicl is common to the smallest bant now in use. As a result the pro gram comes to the listener in it; full tones and the audience hear the show exactly as it was spok L * 1 en into the mike. An example of 5 the difference between FM and AM > (common method of broadcasting) , can be found in the tones of a vio lin. With FM the listener will hear • the full high as well as the low ! notes which are missing from the . broadcasts coming out of the aver | age radio tpday. By the same to ken this example can be used as a comparison on all tonal qualit'es. But what is more important, FM eliminates all rnan-made as well as natural static. And brother that is reason enough to most listen ' ers. 1 THE LISTENING POST If all C. H. McAllister’s, safety • director Tide Water Power Co., : new gadgets work, he will be able I to give radio-minded beginners a course in “six easy lessons in ' frequencies” . . . Victor Borge, I the unmelancholy Dane and laes tro of piano and comedy, will guest ' the Quiz Kids program next Sun day . . . Bob Andrews trained in ■ from New York today and will be • on hand for his regular spot on ' the local Wednesday night show . . ' Jimmy Gleason, famous Holly ! wood funster and his wife, Lucille. 1 will serve up the laughs on Jimmy 1 Gleason’s Diner, which bows in • locally through the ABC network ' next Monday 10 to 10:30 p. m. . . . ! Mrs. H. R. Emory, well known lo ’ cal pianist, receives this corner’s ' congrats for her excellent musical job on the A. L. casting the other night. OF ALL THINGS Most of us have done a little night star-gazing during our lives, for reasons of romance or pro found astronomical speculation, and are consequently familiar with the shooting stars or meteors which flash silently overhead on sum mer nights. Yet few are aware that it is possible to “hear” these visitors from outer space during the course of their brief plunge through heavens—but its true— by use of a short wave receiver. As a matter of fact it is possible to estimate the speed they are travelling by the same method . . . Picture of the week: Reggie Lewis eating an ice cream cone out in the cold—brrrrr ....
