flood control MASS MEET SET Waccamaw River Project fo Be Discussed At Two Meetings Saturday WHITEVIL-LE, July 10 — Two , .meetings on the proposed River flood control "'^eC.' One spokesman said this morn ing that a large turnout at these meetings Saturday would be evi dence that the people really want something done about drainage in the Waccamaw basin. AGENT LEAVES WHITEVILLE, July 10—J. p. Quinerly, assistant county farm agent, left Thursday morning with other North Carolina delegates to attend a Southern Farm Bureau Training School at San Antonio Texas. Mr. Quinerly will return about July 20. DURHAM MAN NAMED FIRE FIGHTERS HEAD AT ASHEVILLE MEET ASHEVILLE, July 10—OP}—Wil liam H. Copely, of Durham, was named president of the North Car olina Fire Fighters’ association at the closing session of a two-day convention here today. Other offi cers included J. L. Hall ©f Ashe ville, Henry Watkins of Raleigh; and W. E. Cox of Winston-Salem, vice presidents; and H. E. Black mon of Charlotte, secretary-treas urer. The convention passed a reso lution recommending that cities receive a larger income from the state gasoline tax revenues. A CORRECTION! WHITEVILLE POST COMMITTEES S E T ; American Legion Adds j Eight New Members To Stadium Group Special to the Star WHITE VILLE July 10—A com plete new list of committees was formed by the Whiteville Amer ican Legion Post 137 at the regular meeting held on Tuesday night, July 8, with eight additional mem bers being assigned to the newly built Memorial Stadium. The sta dium committee is one of the most important groups in the legion at the present time, stated officials, as the problems of managing the new park are numerous. Ralph Sholar, finance chairman of the stadium, reported that he had sent out bids for the construc tion of a roof over the grandstand and that bids were expected in by the end of the week. The legion hopes to have the roof up by the end of the month in accordance with their excelerated efforts to complete the field by the end of the baseball season. At the request of Sholar the fol lowing men will now serve on the Memorial Committee; Glenn Dorward, Herbert Phifer, C. D. Pickerell, O. L. Owen, Dew ey Hardy, H. M. DUPUNMANHELD ON ASSAULT COUNT Another Charged With Abetting In Assault On Onslow Woman Special To The Star JACKSONVILLE, July Ifr-A 80 year-old Duplin county whit* man wai being held in the Onslow coun ty jail here tonight without benefit of bond on a charge of criminal assault upon a young Onslow coun ty white woman last Saturday night, according to Sheriff Dan Sanders. Another 20-year-old youth of Maple Hill was being held under a $2,000 bond on a charge of an attempted criminal assault and with abetting in a criminal assault. Bennio Foy, of Wallace is held without bond and Pender Gug ganus is charged with abetting in the assault upon Lucy Foy, who Sheriff Sanders said, is no rela tion to the Wallace man. The young woman lives in the Nine Mile sec tion of Onslow county. The sheriff said that no date has been set for a hearing pend ing a conference with Solicitor J. Abner Parker. LIFE MAGAZINE WITH LOCAL SAFETY SHOW I PICTURES SOON OUT The July 14 issue of Life maga zine, to hit the newstands aoon, will carry picture! and a itory of S. Davis Polvogt, of Wilmington, and his death-defying bicycle act. Seven of the pictures, made by a Life photographer at a safety show held at the Legion Stadium here and sponsored by the police department and MacMillan-Cam eron Company, appear in the na tional magazine. Most of the pic tures show Polvogt, 28, tire sales man, suspended in midair after a collision with an automobile. Entitled “How not to ride a bi cycle in traffic,” the story of the local boy is used in connection wifh a bicycle court for kids in California. CUTTER MENDOTA ON ICE PATROL, NORTH ATLANTIC, July 10—On Sunday, July 6, the Mendota found the long sought i'or berg after receiving a report of its position in the morning from the SS William Wheelwright. “This berg had drifted around the tail of the banks and con siderably farther' to westward thin our computations had allow ed for. Since then we have drifted with the berg, warning passing ships, and have watched it steadi ly calve and melt until it is now only a fair sized growler, but still a very solid hazard to navigation.” the cutter reported. The Mendota will be relieved on ice patrol by the cutter Spencer. The Spencer comes out from Argentia having just completed a weather patrol. The Mendota will arrive in Argentia tomorrow, pick up service passengers and some cargo, then proceed to Boston, ar riving there on Saturday, July 12. The Mendota will stand by in Boston pending terminatien of the surface patrol and release, if this occurs before July 20. Otherwise the Mendota will resume the sur face patrol relieving the Spencer on July 23. Early travelers to Japan re ported that in trials for theft a piece of red-hot metal was placed in the hand of the accused, who then threw It away. If his hand was unburned, he was adjudged innocent.
