While Advancers Were
Plentiful, Declines Top
Closing List
NEW YORK, July 15—(JP)—The
climbing stock market today suf
fered its second average dip in
14 straight sessions although the
retreat was far from unanimous
and assorted favorites continued
to post new highs for the year or
longer.
Irregularly lower tendencies dul
ed from the start. There was a
comeback around midday and
again in the final hour with short
covering and mild investment de
mand propping motors and special
issues. While gainers were plenti
ful at the close, declines predomi
nated. Dealings slowed at inter
vals and transfers for the full
proceedings tapered to 1,180,000
shares from Monday’s 1,660,000
which were a peak since May 19.
It was the tenth successive day
in which the million-mark was ex
ceeded.
Brokerage customers generally
inclined to trim accounts on the
idea two months of climbing
prices, with the industrials at a
top since last August, called for a
sizable technical correction.
Doubts regarding European af
fairs and domestic tax relief chill
ed enthusiasm. Inflationary psy
chology and the plethora of idle
funds seeking yields served as an
anti-liquidating argument. Divi
dends and earnings were helpful
although there were exceptions
here.
Composite Off
The Associated Press 60-Stock
Composite was off .1 of a point
at 67.6, first slip since last Wednes
day. It was another broad mar
ket, 1,034 issues registering. Of
these, 465 fell and 346 rose.
Becording tops for 1947 were
Hershey Chocolate, up 4 points at
92 on a single 100-share sale fol
lowing the first extra dividend in
several years; Chrysler 1 1-8 at 60
1-4, McGraw Electric 1 1-2 at 44,
U. S. Lines 7-8 at 22 5-8 and Union
Pacific 1-2 at 139 12.
Phillips—Jones added 4 at 31 cn

Studebaker, Willys-Overland, Nash
Kelvinator, American Telephone
(despite declining net for the June
quarter), Santa Fe, Great Northern
Railway, Guantanamo Sugar, Vir
ginia-Carolina Chemical and Pub

Douglas Aircraft conceded 2 1-4
at 55 1-2 when the concern report
ed a six-months’ loss compared
with a substantial profit a year
ago. Down a point or so were U.
S. Steel at 75, Bethlehem 90,
Youngstown Sheet 68 1-4, Western
Union “A” 23 1-2, Dow Chemical
170 7-8, Spencer Kellogg 29 1-2 and

were Anaconda, Northern Pacific,
North American, Texas Co.,
Sperry, Du Pont, J. C. Penney, U.
S. Rubber, Montgomery Ward and
Johns-Manville.
Bonds Uneven
Bonds were uneven. Commodi
ties turned strong after early hesi
tancy. Cotton futures soared $4.45
to $5.25 a bale. At Chicago wheat
was up 2 1-2 to 4 1-2 cents a
bushel, corn 1 1-4 to 5 and oats
off 1-8 to up 1 7-8.
In the Curb modest improvement
was shown for Atlas Plywood,
Burry Biscuit, National Transit,
Unexcelled Chemicals and Cherry

Laggards were National Bellas
Hess, United Shoe, American
Cyanamid, Humble Oil, Pantepec
