Ball As the water ran Mr, Johns remarked, "It only takes a little ; light, tor a person to see and to , take advantage of the tilings or • his own door steps.” He continued by saying, "I didn’t; know that it would be done so easily,” Mrs ! Johns also had her say "My chil dren always had to go down to the spring at night, and set me ; a fresh drink of water before go to to bed, but. its all over now because 1 have it running in my ; house, I can drink it any tune ; day or night, and even do a much i better job at. cooking and wash - | mg.” Over the 16 year period the Johns family averaged 13 trips per day to the spring or 75,920 over the same period With the spring being 240 feet one way or 480 feet round trip it adds up to the fam ily walking 438 miles per year or 7008 miles over a 16 year period, All over the Wake County farm families are capitalizing on their springs whiie still others are hav ing wells drilled so as to enjoy a more convenient, water supply. After laying by all of his crops Mr. Johns called for his boys to give him a hand, and they did. By this time the water had pushed up to a high level m the curbed spring. Along with his son-in-law. the pipe was connected up and buried to the ground from the spring to the house, distance 240 feet. The pump was Installed in the back yard of the dwelling and faucets were installed in the kit chen. on the back porch and in the barn yard. Current was then i connected to the pump. After completing the job and turning on the faucet to see the water run, it was as much an in spiration to the Johns family as ! was the first message sent over i the telephone wires by Alexander There may be a lot of luxuries i you can’t afford to give your ' family there days, but the luxury 1 ; cf cleanliness is something you can supply.
