MORE ABOUT THE FAMOUS CARSON-DR. VANCE DUEL By DR. J. E. HODGES Maiden. N. C. I have been greatly surprised by the number of requests I have received for more information on the Careon-Vance duel, the sub ject of the second historical ar ticle in the Democrat Some have been from teachers, saying they had searched the histories ii} vain for some account of it. Prior to the Revolution, the Varices settled in the upper Ca tawba valley, along with the Mc Dowells, Bowman s, Ervins. Car sons, Greenlees and others. A brother of Dr. Robert Vance was the father of the war gov ernor. Zeb B. Vance. Soon aft er the Revolution Dr. Vance's father crossed the Blue Ridjje and settled on Reems Creek in what is now Buncombe county. As the result of a childhood in jury, one leg did not develop normally, and was some three i inches shorter than the other; therefore. Robert was educated i a physician. < After practicing his profession a few years he threw it aside i for the more exciting field of politics, and was elected to con gress for several terms. He be came vainly proud of his seat, so much so. that he told his friends it meant more to him than life itself Prior to the Revolution. Col. John Carson settled near Pleas ant Gardens in the present coun ty of McDowell. His firtt wife was the daughter of "Hunting John" McDowell, the founder of the Pleasant Gardens estate. Joseph McDowell, brother of Carson's wife, had married the daughter of Col. George Moffitt. Col. Moffitt's wife was Sarah McDowell, who was killed by the Indians in the Valley of Virginia. On the death of Joseph Mc Dowell. Col. John Carson mar ried his widow, Col. Carson's wife having died several years, before. Samuel P. Carson was the grandson of Col. John Carson and Mary Moffitt McDowell Carson. In the 1827 congressional cam paign. Dr. Vance foresaw his de feat by Carson that year, but thinking from Carson's polished, genteel, jolly-good-fellow man ner, that he was a coward and would not accept a challenge, and that by refusing to accept his challenge, he would destroy him self politically ever after. The most fatal mistake the doc tor ever made was when he doubted the courage of a Carson. Regardless of the pleadings of his friends, he issued the chal lenge, with the result as describ ed in the previous article. Dr. Vance died while being re moved to the home of his father on Reems Creek, and is buried in the Vance cemetery there with only a crude marker over his grave. Two more terms the voters sent Carson to the house, but he could not live down the stigma ?f having been a duelist, so he migrated to Texas in 1835 and a year later served as a member of of the assembly- that formed the constitution of Texas, and under Sam Houston became the first sec retary of state for Texas, and led the fight to bring the Lone Star State into the federal fold. The anti-dueling law was pass ed in 1803, the result of the Spaight-Stanley duel in 1802. Spaight was in the U. S. senate and through a political fight such ill feeling was engendered that Stanley challenged Spaight. The duel was fought on the outskirts of New Bern September 5, 1902. and Spaight, fatally wounded, died next day. This was the last "legal" duel to take place within the borders of North Carolina. The legisla ture was so shocked by the death of such a prominent man in such a manner, that it passed the act making "ineligible to any act of trust honor or profit. Any one sending, bearing or accepting a I challenge, and in case of a duel and either is killed, the survivor and all aiding or abbetting shall suffer death." The above reminds: when in New Bern, don't forget to visit the John Wright Stanley house It is owned by the Library Asso ciation, houses a library and mu seum. It was built by the father of the duelist, who was an out standing patriot. He lost 14 pri vateers (vessels fitted out to cap ture British commerce) during the Revolution. President Wash ington was entertained there, when on his trip through the south in 1791. General Nathaniel Greene obtained a loan from Stanley that agisted valuably in his campaign West Jefferson Will Have Burley House West Jefferson ?
