Woodson Quits As President The Board of Trustee* of the Edgar Tufts Memorial Associa tion, composed of Lees-McRae College, Grandfather Home for Children, and Charles A. Cannon, Jr. Memorial Hospital at their ?emi-annual meeting July 20, ac cepted the retirement request of Dr. Marshall Scott Woodson as President of the Institution. Robert C. HayeS of Concord, a member of the Board of Trustees for many years was elected as his successor. Four big days of spec tacular horseshowing and elabor ate parties will highlight the social activities of this *eason and will draw, as in the years past, an immense crowd to the mountains ? to one of the best known shows in the country. General Manager, Mrs. L. M. Tate, and Assistant Manager, Miss Mary Anne Tate, have worked dil ligently to produce an even larger and better show than ever before. ftie popular Mr. Reed Wilson of Asheville will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the seven per formances which will begin at 10:00 a. m. and 2:00 p. m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with a 9:00 I p. m. darting time set for the championship competition on Sun day. Judging in the hunter and jump er divisions will be the Honor able Edward BywaUrs of Warren ton, Virginia, and from Millers burg, Kentucky will be the Honor able A. B. Plummer, D. V. M., judging the saddle horse entries. There will be roadsters, west ern parade horses, pony hunters, gaitfd horses, Tennessee walking horses, open-jumping horses ? these are just a few of the sixty four classcs, each with a different purpose and set of judging stand ards. All the classes will be equ ally pleasing to those who will turn, out at Broyhill Park next week to see the most exciting event of the summer. Official veterinarian. Dr. John G. Martin of Boone, and the of ficial farrier, G. E. (Pop) Houser, will be available to the owners of the three hundred and fifty or four hundred horses that will be stabled on the grounds this year. And the competition will be quite keen among the horsemen; four memorial trophies, twenty-eight donated trophies, and $4,448.00 in prize money are the stakes. . Thursday night of the hone show weekend, the exhibitors will be honored at a square dance in the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock, and then Friday night the owners and riders will be invited to the Exhibitor i,' Party "Northwest Showcase" Theme of Dixie Fair "Showcase for the Northweit" if the new theme for the 1961 Dixie Classic F?ir, to be held October 10-14 in the Coliieum at Winrton Salem. In making the announce ment, Fair Manager Neil Bolton Mid, "Thii new theme* is moat indicative of the purpose of the Fair in highlighting the induatry, agriculture, products, and services of Northwest North Carolina." The new theme will be incorporated in all phases of the Fair. Grading and Drainage Work Bolton also announced that new grading and drainage work has been done on the Fair grounds to drain away rain if it should come again this year, as it has for the last several years. He added that the Dixie Classic Fair is one of only three fairs in North Carolina whfre an Atomic Energy Commis sion traveling display can be seen this year. This display will be of considerable size and will bring with it its own motion picture sequences.
