POISED ON A NEEDLE’S EYE: How can 18 diodes, four trans istors and eight resistors be balanced on the eye of a sewing needle? Easy. Pack them into an integrated circuit, like the one on this magnifed 2V4-inch-long needle. An example of the electronic miracle of miniaturization, the circuit is only one-twentieth of an inch wide. It is under manufacturing development at Western Electric’s Allentown Works for use in new Bell System communications equipment. Letters To The Editor Unwarranted Assault” Cited Dear Rob: When persons make such an unwaranted assult upon your fine newspaper as was recently made, concerning your position on the food store boycott, I feel readers who disagree should respond. Without going into the illogical arguments presented, it should be pointed out to persons who are interested in honest inquiory, that at the retail food level there is pro bably a lower mark-up than for any other major consum er item. As you know, person ally, I am in no way connect ed with the food industry and I hold no brief for food stores. I also desire the low est prices possible but the most likely result of a gener al food boycott would be to drive the small independent grocer out of business. Persons who are really in terested in the facts can easily verify that food items in chain grocery stores are marked up only about 10%. After payment of the usual costs of operating the store this leaves less than 2% net profit on the sales dollar. Perhaps there are ways the grocer can economize and re duce certain of his costs but to press for a reduction in the small margin of profit is fin ally doomed to an exercise in futility. Likes Our Policy Dear Rob, Glad to see your “State ment of Policy” concerning the boycott of chain stores. I am one of those who remem bers the days when groceries were stacked outside the store front to attract custom ers, also it was necessary to keep an eye on the roving dogs. I wonder how many people have reduced or cut out cigaret smoking, cocktails and other luxuries because of the price tag. Sincerely, Amelia Greer Boone, N. C.
