CAPITOL CLIPBOARD Says Democrats Odds-On Favorites In Assembly BY EULA N. GREENWOOD C ERTAINTY .. .Thequestioi as to how it is figured the nex Legislature will be Demo cratic—as stated here las week—deserves an answer. There are 120 seats in th< House; 50 in the State Senate A lot of the Democrats nomi rated in the May Primary have no Republican opponents this fall. There is a great deal ol this letting the Democrats win by default in the eastern and southern parts of the State. Add to these districts those that have never gone Republican and you have an easy majority of the House in the Democratic column. From here, it looks like at least 75 certain Demo cratic votes. A hurried look at the list of nominees shows only two Republicans—Jeter Haynes of Yadkin and Claude Billings of Wilkes—without Democratic opposition. Now over in State Senate Democratic situation is even more favorable. It looks as if about 15 of the 50 Democratic nominees have no opposition. Looking at it conservatively, there should be 35 Democrats in this body. Again, only in one district— District 25 composed of Davie, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin— are the Republicans without op position. In Maine last year, where they had a Democratic governor and a Republican legislature, there was such a fight in the regular session—1 a r g e 1 y over fi nances—that the lawmaking body was called back to the capital in the fall so the State would have sufficient funds for its day-to-day operations. BREWER ... It begins to look as if Kidd Brewer’s Crab tree project will soon begin .bearing big fruit. ARhoi«h a . lot of money has been spent <UVj preparing this area for a shopping center, only a service station is in operation there as you enter Raleigh from Dur ham on U. S. Highway 70. Rumors are that things are ready to roll—with Sears, Belk, , and one or two others ready to—or thinking about, moving j into Crabtree Valley. Pretty *, country. „ EASY NAMES . . . Lookii* - over the list of Wake Forest freshman football prospects carried on the sports pages the other day, an old alumnus hung his head in despair: “Seems like we’ve got some losing sea. sons coming up ... I can pronounce every one of these boys’ names ...” REVOLT . . . Mrs. Dan Reel, Sr., of Route X, Den ver—that’s a little community in Lincoln County—writes as follows: “Will you please print this letter addressed to Baptist pas tors? What I say applies to 90 per cent of them. “Why do you ask for and get an expense account? . . . Why do you not figure your own expense like we members must do . . . You have a free home, plus free power, plus a lot of free food and many of you have new cars given to you. “Many of you draw a larger salary than most of your mem bers, drive a finer car, wear finer clothes and have your insurance taken care of by the church. Yet, you tell us church members our sins are the cause of no power In the church.” GRANTED . . . The letter was written to Editor Marse Grant of the Bibical Recorder. He, with straight face and no comment, ran the letter in his ptfjli cation. Well, right off the reel, came replies from some of the pas tors . . . Just as Grant knew they would. Here are some sentences from one written by the Rev. Wilburn Edmondson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Conover, in Catawba County: "... I only know of two pastors who have received a new car after about 20 years of service and they wore out the other one visiting undeveloped Christians. In these churches, a few of the members almost had heart failure when they even thought of the idea . . . Us tally those who do the griping are ones who toss God a dollar on Sunday and say I have done my little bit, I will see you again, God, hast SuixJav. “ The Rev. Mr. Edmondson says “one ala ... has taken the . iK,; power out of our churches am that^ is the sin of stealing fron i God”; and he refers to th< . third chapter of Malachi, las | book in the Old Bible. Now the Rev. B. L. Connell pastor of Hartis Grove Churcl out from Matthews in Mecklen burg County, says he has beer in the pastorate 18 years, with his wife working 16 erf those to help support the family. He adds: “ . . . My present salary is less than$100 weekly. Many of my members draw much above this, some double that amount. Most have cars much newer than mine. I have bought one suit in the last three years and pay all my insurance except Ministers Retirement . . .” It could be that Mrs. Reel might have the answer ... or even be in on the secret, as to why about 500 Baptist Deaths Mrs. M.
