PAGE FOUR Governor Appeals For Army Nurses Sacred Duty of State to Help Treat Wounded Heroes In a letter to Governor R. Gregg Cherry, asking that he exercise his leadership, Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, General of the Army, urg ed that seven platoons, or 105 women, be recruited immediately from North Carolina to be trained as members of Women’s Army Corps General Hos pital Companies. “With army casualty lists steadily mounting and because of the critical shortage of doctors and nurses in Army hospitals, the only final source of potential aid is from women be tween the ages of 20 and 49,’’ said Governor Cherry. “It is North Carolina’s sacred hon or and duty,’’ continued the Governor, “to help restore the health of these wounded heroes, many of them our own Carolina boys, and I know our women will never fail these men as they are again callcj upon to fight— this time ;i dir'iicuit rehabilitation struggle—-the Hattie of America.” “in the name o ' all Narth Caro lina women, l have accepted this as signment from General Marshall, and fervently hope that our State will be the first in the Union to fulfill our quota.” In an effort to secure volunteers from Chowan County, Sgt. STATIONED IN ALABAMA Calvin Julius Moore, Steward’s 1 mate second class, son of Martha Moore of Edenton, is stationed at Chickasaw, Ala., assigned to Ferry Crew Number Five. Prior to this Moore was stationed at the U. S. Naval Training Station, Bainbridge, Md. Before enlisting in the Navy on August 3, 1944, in Ra leigh, he was employed as a farmer.
