PAGE SIX Robert S. Marsh Joins Agents On Educational Tour Group Goes to Tennes see and Missouri on J Inspection Trip i I Robert S. Marsh, assistant county agent in Chowan County, was among a group of 62 county agents, repre- 1 senting all sections of North Caro- • lina who took an educational agricul tural tour May 16 through May 25. The first stop was near Paris, Tenn., ■ in Henry County, where the county agent of Henry County took the group : to three farms where they observed how balanced farming practices are carried out. This section of Tenues- < see has primarily a livestock produc ing area, therefore the emphasis is on • dairy and beef cattle, hogs and sheep. Small grains and pastures are very important to all farmers who carry 1 out balanced farming practices. The ■ group observed Excellent crimson 1 clover, red clover and vetch, and also : good winter pastures on the various ' farms which were visited. All the civic organizations of Paris are; 100 per cent behind the agricultural pro gram in Henry County. The two 1 banks in Paris are also backing the 1 agricultural program, as they have a c full time representative who woj*ks f with the farmers. The banks’ repre- 1 sentatives give advice concerning i farm loans, arrangements for such loans to be made, and gives supervi- c sion where needed. At Springfield, Missouri, the guests visited several dairy farms which are using the latest agricultural prac tices. As the land is very rolling in this section, soil conservation is a great problem and the farmers must be careful in the use of the soil. Dairy farming is the greatest single y enterprise of this particular section of Missouri. Most herds consist of Guernseys and Holsteins, or Jerseys and Holsteins. Pastures are particu larly good at this time of the year, ATHLETES FOOT GERM Imbeds Deeply To Cause Painful Cracking, Burning, Itching. Most dairy farmers in thik section appear to be prosperous. However, the lack of adequate farm labor has curtailed many of their op erations. One of the most interesting visits of the entire trip was the one to the Doane Agricultural Service, Inc., of St Louis. This service is devoted en tirely to agriculture and analyzes trends of agriculture: and suggests improvements. Mr. Doane showed two ears of yellow corn which look to be the same. However, one corn is a regular variety but the other is a com which furnishes starch to replace the starch in tapioca. During the war the supply of tapioca was cut off and this new corn was developed. The significance of this new corn is that two kinds of com can be grown in the same field and yet be non-competitive. In case Tappa com is not needed to furnish starch, it may be fed for .the same purpose as regular corn. LAYMEN’S DAY SUNDAY AT METHODIST CHURCH Laymen’s Day will be observed at the Edenton Methodist Church at next Sunday morning’s service. Laymen of the church will be in charge of the service, to which the public is in vited.
