Speed Cause Os Many Accidents One Out of Every Three Fatal Accidents Due Tq Speeding “Too much speed is a contributing factor in one out of every three fatal traffic accidents,” says Jeff B. Wil son, director of the Highway Safety Division. “Tjjiis means that too high speeds play a part in the deaths of approximately 250 persons yearly on North Carolina highways.” as important as posted speed limits—if not more so —according to Wilson, are the speed limits that each motorist should impose upon himself. “Call them ‘conscience speed limits’ if you wish,” the Highway Safety De partment director said. “But in every driver there should be a sense of re sponsibility toward his driving—a realization that posted speed limits are an interpretation of what consti tutes safe speed on a road under ideal circumstances. “Too seldom, however, is the road traveled under ideal circumstances. Long leaf pine (pinus-talus trin), is the world’s most beauti ful evergreen and also one of the south’s best lumber producers. It can be successfully grown in skips in most of the southern states except Tennessee and Ken tucky, it is stated in an announce ment sent here by the Southern States Forestfire Commission, Inc., Birmingham 5, Ala., who are advocating a tree planting cam paign in the schools of this sec tion. “The Long leaf beauty comes from the needles which because of rich resin shine in diamond scintillating effect”, the announce ment states. On cleared land it requires about 700 seedlings per acre, but on land already partially re forested as few as 100 wiH be sufficient for each acre. Seedlings are usually obtain ablep at the State Nursery at $2 per thousand Lo.b. road surface, the driver’s physical condition, and countless other factors must be taken into account. Posted speed limits should be a guide. Often conditions make them too high for safety. “Take it easy when you drive,” Wil son warned. “The minute you might save by speeding is never worth a fraction of the life you risk trying it.” Wilson gave the following seven tips on speed: 1. Heed both legal and common sense speed limits. 2. Maintain control over your car at all times so that if a quick stop is necessary it can be made safely. 3. Remember that intersections and traffic signals are slow-down spots. Be prepared to stop. 4. Keep an adequate distance be tween you and the car ahead. 5. Remember that there may be a car right behind you—keep an eye on it in the rear view mirrow, give proper hand signals, and avoid on-a dime stops. 6. Slow down at sundown. Your speed at night should be no greater than that at which you can stop with THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C., THURSDAY, JULY 14, 1949. in the range of your headlight. 7. Probably the most important rule of all is—never forget that speed kills and cripples thousands annually. ' Cloud types and formation can gjve I a pretty fair idea of coming weather. • Unfortunately, most of these signs only point to rain, or the absence of it. They aren’t too much help in predict ing wind. And while rain on the water I can be unpleasant, the real concern of the boatman who thinks first of safety, is to predict wind. Familiar to almost every sports man, particularly in the Midwest, is ' the thunderstorm, heralded usually by the slow appearance above the horizon of a big, unbroken cloud of a deep blue-black. If you’re on exposed water, in a small boat, it’s time to i head in as soon as the storm is definitely sighted. Along the seacoasts, old-timers are wary of any black clouds, for they ; can always mean squall winds. How ever, inland where waters are usually less exposed, a big detached cloud . with a ‘ dark center often means a shower without high winds. Anyone who plans a really exposed water trip should get a good baro -1 meter and learn how to use it. The weather bureau will always give a ‘ lou’re without either of these services, there are some rules for amateur fore casting of wind. Remember that it takes hot, damp weather to make a thunderstorm. If it is very dry, there won’t be one. Re member that a storm isn’t necessary to create a wind that will bother an outboard; real blows for a small boat occur in perfectly clear weather. On fair summer days, the wind is SCHENLEY,,™ J|L THE STRAIGHT WHISKIES IN THIS l OOf STRAIGHT WHISKY 5 YEARS OLD. Scheoley Distributors, Inc, ioultvilh, Ky. likely to rise late in the morning and reach a peak in the afternoon. If the wind rose the day before, with a stiff breeze in the afternoon, it’s only plain sense to anticipate another such rise for the following afternoon if the fair, settled weather is continuing. One interesting thing about predict ing weather is that a lot of the old, scoffed-at weather superstitions aren’t superstitions at all, but are actually pretty darn reliable. Red sunsets and rainbows late in the day do mean fair weather. A ring around the moon or a steady southeast wind often foretell wet weather. Rain-before-seven-clear by-eleven is another reliable one if the rain is a quiet one. Specialist Observes Chowan Plant Pests H. R. Garriss, Extension plant di sease Specialist, spent Wednesday of last week with the County Agent in iChowan County observing fields of vegetables for disease, particularly cantaloupes. A leafspot disease is do ing some damage in several fields of cantaloupes. The Downy Mildew, generally the destructive disease to cucumbers and cantaloupes, was not found present in any of the six fields examined. The very large damage to the melon crop was found to be water. TAX COLLECTIONS Sheriff J. A.
