National Guard Will Start Big Recruiting Drive September 19 Effort Wfflße Made to Raise Strength to 45,000 Men According to Major General Ken neth F. Cramer, Chief of the National Guard will undertake a 60-day re cruiting campaign to raise its strength an additional 45,000 men. Since reorganization began in 1946, the National Guard of the United States has grown to a strength of more than 358,020 men who are train ed to take their place in the country’s first line of defense. Now that the men are back with plenty of “know how,” they will be competing with each other in trying to fill up their pla toons in order to be the first to get their mortar squads fully manned. This means good pay, fellowship, ath letics, retirement benefits and service to the community, state and country. Sgt. John Asbell, administrative as sistant, is on hand at the armory in Edenton every day from 9 A. M. un til 5 P. M. Interested candidates may apply there or to the commanding of ficer of the company, Captain William P. Jones. Ages are 17 to 34, with special allowances made for those with prior service. Important For 4-H Club Members To Check Corn Yield Prior To Harvest All 4-H Club members who have an acre of com as a project this year should be sure that the yield has been checked by the County Agent or the assistant County Agent before the com is harvested. In case a club member and his dad are ready to harvest his com and the yield has not been checked, they should contact the County Agent’s of fice a few days before harvest date so that the yield can be determined. Miss Evie Barrow Dies After Year’s Illness Miss Evie Barrow, 74, died at the home of her brother, T. B. Barrow, Sunday night at 8 o’clock. A native of Perquimans County, deceased had lived in Edenton most of her life. She had been in failing health for over a year. She was a member of the Yeopim Baptist Church. Surviving are four brothers, J. W. Barrow, T. B. Barrow, Frank Barrow , and John Barrow.
