Drunken Driving .Convictions Drop 707 Fouitd~Guilty Com pared With 722 In r. April Last Year Drunken driving convictions took a alight downward turn during April with TO7 persons found guilty of the offense as compared with 722 in the same month last year, ths (North Car dlina Department of iMotor Vehicles has reported. • Fifty-five of the defendants were convicted on second offense. Revocations for drunken driving brought to 942 the total of revoca tions for April. Two hundred and fifty-eight persons had their licenses suspended. v Forty-six persons were convicted of •driving after their licenses were re voked and 19 of driving after license suspended. Other convictions were as follows: * Two offenses of reckless driving, 20; speeding over 75 miles per hour, 62; two offenses of speeding over 55 miles per hour, 17; larceny of automo bile, three; transporting liquor, 39; unsatisfied judgment, 14; incotii ,potency, four; habitual violator, 11; failure to maintain proof of financial . responsibility, 52. A total of 848 persons were convicted of reckless driving, which does not require re vocation or suspension on first of fense. v£Sn addition, 10,625 persons were Muid guilty of moving violations, dp not require revocations or sus '-;pensions on first offense. Os the ' number, 8,262 were from North Caro lina and 2,363 were out-of-state drivers. •• Speeding topped the* list with 3,- 75? cases. Failure to have driver’s license was second with 1,899. Faulty 'equipment was listed in 956 cases and irrfproper lights in 450. Five hundred ag4 nineteen persons ran through a light, 78 were found guilty of .•posing a School bus and 84 of pass on a hill. ■ * • _ April Record Month For Cars On Highways With motor vehicle registration on ly 10,568 short of a million, the Motor Vehicle Department reports that more vehicles used the highways of the State, during April than during any - month in history. Registration figures mounted to 989,432 as compared with 882,759 on the same date last year, an increase of 106,673. Although seasonal use of highway does not reach a peak until August, figures from James S. Burch, engi neer of statistics and planning of the State Highway Commission, revealed that on an average day in April, 68,- 102 vehicles passed the State’s 20 full-time electric counting machines, as compared with 7,623 last August and 69,075 last April. The figures represented a 15 per cent increase over April of last year. DELORENE PHTHISIC GRADUATE East Carolina Teachers College con ferred degrees last week upon 240 graduates of the 1949-50 term. Cere monies in the Wright auditorium, at tended by an audience from the camp us*, the city of Greenville, and other localities, marked the forty-first an nual co'mmencejnent at the College. Among the graduates was Miss Delorene Phthisic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haywood Phthisic. Os the number, 22,208 went to op erators, bringing to 875,180 the num ber of operator’s licenses issued s*inee the re-issuance program began.
