PAGE FOURTEEN Farm Safety Week Planned In July Rural People Asked to Learn and Observe Safety Rules The State College Extension Ser vice will cooperate in observance of National Farm Safety Week, July 23-29, as proclaimed by President Truman, the local County Agent said this week. “Goal of National Farm Safety Week,” said the county agent, “is to encourage rural people to learn and observe farm safety rules. Most ac cidents in 1949 involved some viola tion of a common-sense safety rule. If the toll of accidents is to be held down this year, all members of farm families must become familiar with the rules of safety in the home, at work, in traffic, and at play. And they must practice these rules every day of the year.” Accidents wilf kill an average of 48 American farm residents every day during the next 12 months unless extra precautions are taken, according to the National Safety Council. The County Agent said special local programs are being planned through out the State in observance of the special week. Outstanding Pictures Scheduled At Taylor Due to many inquiries as to the pictures scheduled to be shown at the Taylor Theatre, Manager Jimmy Earnhardt this week released a list of outstanding pictures which will be shown during the summer months. The list includes the following: “Wabash Avenue,” “The Hasty Heart,” “The Reformer and the Red head,” “Cheaper 'By the Dozen,” “The 'Conspirator,” "Bright Leaf,” “Three Came Home,” “Stampede,” “Mother Didn’t Tell Me,” “The Eagle and the Hawk,” “The Big Hangover,” “An nie Get Your Gun,” “No Man of Her Own,” “Samson and Delilah,” “A Ticket to Tomahawk,” “The Savage Horde,” “The Prince of Peace,” “Kill the Umpire,” “Father of the Bride,” “The Great Dan Patch,” “Coly 45,” “All the King’s Men,” “Love That Brute,” “Singing Guns,” “Thelma Jordan,” “Francis,” “Mark of the Gorrilla,” “Winchester 73,” “No Sad Songs For Me,” “Tokyo Joe,” “Cur tain Call at Cactus Creek,” “Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town,” “Duchess of For— State Legislature L i >»■■■■ MRS. JOSIE RUTH WHEELER CARR Experienced teacher, Chowan County historian with membership in several historical societies, and President of the Business and Profes sional Women’s Clufb of Edenton. Below are four .points in support of her candidacy: “1. To exert my efforts, if elected, to finding means of keeping the children in school until high school graduation, and thus give the State better equipped cit-zens, and the taxpayers value received for the money spent on public education. The recent survey off the State Education Commission shows that only half of the children entering the first grade will jet to the ninth grade, and only half of those who get that far will graduate. “2. To study carefully each issue for proposed legislation, keep you informed of such proposals through the medium of the press and your clubs, ask for your opinions, and represent you on the basis off what seems to be the majority of opinions; believing as did those delegates to the 1776 Halifax Convention that: ‘All political power is vested in and derived from the people only.’ In this way I hope to get all people interested in their government’s affairs. "3. To maintain or improve necessary existing services, such as schools, roads, bridges, etc., rendered by the State or increase those services as your opinions would dictate, and at the same tiifie elim inate any waste, of which through you and by my own study I can learn, and furnish these services to you with plans designed to get the most for the tax dollar. “4.i To encourage and promote women’s responsibility to their gov ernment, to the end that they, who are tax payers, wage earners, and in the majority in directing the children in the homes, schools and churches, might have their thoughts and ideals represented in govern ment.” Your Vote Will Be Greatly Appreciated On Saturday, May 27th ■A- ■ ’ :: I; Idaho," "Damned Don’t Cry,” ‘tOota manche Territory,” "The Asphalt Jungle,” “Tell It to .the Judge,” “The Nevadan,” “The Skipper Surprised I His Wife,” “Woman of Distinction,” ' “Sierra, the Gunfighter,” “The Happy Years,” * “'Devil’s Doorway,” and many other good pictures to be re leased for the fajl months.
