PAGE TEN Next Cancer Clinic Scheduled Dec. 15 Very Essential to Detect Disease In Early Stages “By making every doctor’s office a cancer-detection center we can save , 100,000 otherwise doomed men, women , and children all over the United States ; in the next twelve months.” This i 8 the statement made by Clive Howard in his article which appeals in the December issue of the Reader’s Di gest. i This scientific estimate was made ■ from evidence in actual experience. > Hillsdale County in Michigan began ] a campaign January 1, 1948, to reme- i dy their high cancer mortality rate. ] During the first two years, the Hills- 1 dale doctors examined 1,721 patients, i and found 65 cases of cancer. One- ] third were in the early stage; another i 29 ,per cent were only moderately ad- i vanced. They discovered that they were finding twice as many cases as a formerly, and soon enough so that < treatment is almost always success- t ful. ' The article continues by saying that in Hillsdale County, fear of cancer has been replaced by knowledge. It has become routine for citizens of the county to have examinations for can cer, and their doctors stress the im portance of repeated checkups at six month or one year intervals. The most effective way to save sufferers of cancer is to detect the disease in its early stages. This can only be accomplished if every man and woman will cooperate by asking for periodic cancer examinations, and if doctors will be on the alert for early and curable cancers. The Northeastern Carolina Cancer Detection Center has been in operation for a little more than a year. Exami nations are given without cost and are available to all women thirty-five or over, all men forty or over. In addition, those who are under thirty five are eligible for examination if they have any of the recognized “Dan ger ‘Signals of Cancer.” Upon request the clinic will be glad to send book lets explaining cancer symptoms. Ad dress requests to Cancer Clerk, Health Center, Elizabeth City. By taking advantage of th« facili ties offered at the cancer clinic, many citizens of Northeastern Carolina can be saved by early detection of can cer. The next clinic will be held Fri day, December 15, at the Health Cen ter, and it is the hope of the clinic directors that the people of this area who have not had a recent cancer checkup will do so at this time.
