Chowan Farmers Seeding Pastures ' In Ladino Clover 266 Take Advantage of Planting at Half of Regular Cost The Agricultural Conservation Pro gram gave a big boost to efforts to provide more and better pastures on Chowan County farms during the 1950 calendar year. Some 266 county farmers seeded 1,000 acres of .permanent pastures with 50 per cent of the “out-of-the pocket” cost furnished through the AGP, W. A. Harrell, chairman of the Chowan County Production and Mar keting Administration Committee, an nounced this week. The PMA chairman pointed out that this acreage represents an increase of 750 acres seeded to [pastures by farm ers tinder the AGP last year. Pasture seed, made available to EV participating farmers through the program’s purchase order system, in cluded 2,000 pounds of ladino clover; i 1,244 pounds of orchard grass; and | 4,822 pounds of fescue. Also through the purchase order system farmers received 400 tons of fertilizer and 1,- 100 tons of limestone for use on the pastures. “Farmers who obtain pasture seed under the program are always assur ed of high quality seed,” the farm leader said, “as only seed meeting high germination and purity tests are made available.” Not only in Chowan County, but throughout the State, farmers are taking advantage of services offered j through the Agricultural Conservation | Program to aid them establish more| and better permanent pastures. Re cent announcement by G. Tom Scott, State PMA Chairman, Raleigh, re veals that 255,500 acres of permanent pastures were seeded in the State with ACP assistance during the 1950 calen dar year. This compares with 167,228 acres established under the program last year, and 98,000 acres in 1948. Pasture seed made available through the purchase order plan to partici pating farmers throughout the State a included 1,549,591 pounds of orchard “ grass; 987,021 of fescue; 15,030 white dutch clover and 437,658 of ladino; clover. “Assistance provided under the Ag-| Conservation Program,” j Scott said, “has proved the most es SALE OF VALUABLE FARM UNO The undersigned will offer for sale at public auction at the Courthouse door in Edenton, North Carolina, at n :oo A. The Agricultural Conservation Pro gram is available to all farmers in Chowan County. With the 1951 pro gram already in operation, farmers are urged to visit their county PMA office at Edenton to discuss their con servation needs for the coming year. srae^' Ml By Tmi Ktsfmg Sportsmen are often amazed at the variety of ways they can use cello phane tape when afield. Take canoe! paddles for instance—you can have splinter protection plus a firm, non slip grip if you strip the handles with transparent tape. The tape also pre vents salty human sweat from seep ing into the wood and so eliminates the hazard of gnawing by night-prowl ing animals. Strips of cellophane tape are ex cellent for emergency repairs of rips and holes in canvas tents. Or sup-| pose your rod’s ferrules come loose — just when you’re catching lunkers out in the middle of the • lake. Don’t j give up and go home. Simply secure | the ferrules with strips of tape until | you get back to shore. And cellophane tape can be very useful when you’re getting meals out of-doors. Here’s an idea worth try ing. After finishing the breakfast coffee, seal the cream can with tape— it’s better than doing the job with a broken twig or paper wad. Cracked eggs can be made as sound as the day they were laid—if a strip of tape is used to reseal the crack. The tape keeps the egg intact and also prevents moisture from entering. A pretty sure way to keep from being bothered by mosquitoes and such small pests is to fasten your | shirt and pants’ cuffs tight with tape. | If you break your pipestem, it’ll be | almost as good as new after you wrap it with tape.
