Drainage Os Farms Adopted As Project Ditch Being Renovated To Drain Number of Farms A group of fanners of the Eden ton Community of the Albemarle Soil Conservation (District are now engaged in establishing a community project of farm drainage improvement. The improvement projects consists of the renovation and enlargement of an old lead ditch or outlet ditch. The ditch being renovated lies just North of Edenton and extends from Queen Anne’s Creek swamp to''U. S. Highway 17 and thence across the Norfolk-Southern (Railroad to the Par adise road. It drains farms owned by J. C. Leary, L H. Haskett, W. 'S. Privott, Shelton Moore, W. L, Boswell, John White, Will Holley, W. Spruill, Bon ner Small, Marvin Jackson, Mrs. G. W. Goodwin, T. W. Jones, and Gibson Brickie. The Norfolk-Southern (Rail road and the N. C. Highway Depart ment are cooperating with the farmer group according to previously agreed committments. J. 0. Leary, who is acting as busi ness administrator for the group has employed a dragline contractor to do the job. The dragline machine is now engaged in 'the excavation operations. The old ditch used for draining the farms of the water-shed area had be come badly filled with silt. Its ca pacity for effective drainage had be come greatly reduced. During heavy periods of rainfall several acres of cultivated land was subjected to flood ing. Crop yields on all of the farm land have been considerally diminish ed. The new ditch is designed and is be ing cut with sufficient cross-Section capacity to adequately drain the {§rms involved. Approximately 150 acres' of crop land will (be benefitted by the project. Technicians of the Soil Conservation Service are assisting these farmers with the necessary surveys, the ditch design, cost estimates and calculations, and with the supervision of the ex cavation operations. The job should be completed in about a week. Instruction Given To School Bus Drivers Instructions for approaching and crossing railroad crossings safely are being distributed to the approximately 11,000 school bus drivers who will operate the State’s school bus fleet next year, the Department of Motor Vehicles has reported. The instructions are being handed to the school bus by the 17 safety promotional field representa tives of the Department’s Highway! Safety Division, who have as their principal duty training and certify ing of school bus drivers. The field representatives are in the .process of training drivers for next year and giving refresher courses to those who are now drivers. The training sessions will last throughout the summer. /www^^/wws/wwv/ww^A/wv»i/sr*/'i/'« Man Consumes Barrel of BAKING SODA One man told us he took baking soda for years.
