During a few spare moments she is writing a letter home. Her classmate, Oletta Askew, of Suffolk, is very happy because the folks at home didn’t forget to write and teU her the hometown news. The present national emergency has created a need for more nurses. With many young girls graduating from high schools in the next several months an opportunity awaits them to.engage in this profession. The Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing offers a three year program in professional nursing with classes beginning each September. Keeping up with the steady advance ment of hospital schools of nursing, an affiliation with the College of William & Mary-V. P. 1., Norfolk, was established in 1943. This affiliation provides for the teaching of the six basic science courses to the student nurses and enables them to transfer these college credits if they desire to continue their education after the three year period. In addition, stu dents may study public health nurs ing at the King’s Daughters Visit ing Nurses Association, and seniors affiliate in psychiatry for three months at the Medical College of Vir ginia, Richmond. The courses dealing with the technical aspects of nurs ing are taught at the hospital by HOID OH! First see what GMC’s get! While attending the school the stu dents live in two attractive dormi tories adjacent to the hospital. The recreational program consists of bas ketball, softball, ping-pong, television, dances and many other social activi ties planned by the Student-Faculty Association. Each year the students publish the P. R. N.—their yearbook which records their three years of progress. One of the happiest moments of the three years is at the end of the five month pre-clinical period when all stu dents who have successfully completed their classroom studies and shown sat isfactory ward work are awarded the cap of the school of nursing. An impressive ceremony is held and the students are officially accepted into the school. Upon completion of the three period graduates of the school are eligible to take the State Board Examina tions in Richmond. The graduate nurse is then etitled ito be called a Registered Nurse, if the examination is passed. The profession offers an (opportunity to specialize in many fields. The young graduate may enter the educational field, remain in insti tutional work, join the armed services, become a public health nurse, work in a doctor’s office, be a private duty nurse, and also has excellent training as a future homemaker. > 'Ho ttoe ‘Dcojutfol* 7**« (oo fojMart*/ For a Rke-nsw appearance lot us givo your shoos a 1 complete rebuilding job > For foot health and comfort ask for "STEERHEAD ,r / genuine leather solos*.
