There has been considerable misunderstanding among iarmers as to the correct method for re porting their earnings for social security tax purposes. Some of this misunderstanding is because there are many cases where the farmer has not made a net income of S6OO and. there fore, believes that no federal in come tax return (Form 1040) is necessary. However, all self employed persons must file Form 1040, with a profit and loss state ment attached, if they net S4OO a year. Emerson. | Vets Prompt In Paying Insurance More than 2,833,000 Veterans holding GI life insurance policies are saving time and money by paying their premiums in ad vance, Veterans Administration announced. The agency said they comprise nearly 60 per cent of the 4,837,- 000 GI policyholders who make direct remittance to VA for their insurance premiums. , Os those making advance pay ments, VA said, 1,203,000 pay an nually, 649,000 pay semi-annually, and 981,000 make quarterly re mittances to VA. Paying premiums in advance eliminates the chance of a veteran forgetting monthly premiums, an action which might cause the pol icy to lapse. In addition to sav ing postage, the agency said, GI policyholders paying in advance get the benefit of a discount in the premium rate. Advance payments at a dis count can be made for any pe riod up to the full life of the poli cy if the veteran desires. Information about advance pay ment of GI insurance premiums is available from the VA office ser vicing the policy, or from any VA local office. CAN A WOMAN BE MURDERED BY HYPNOTISM? GRIFFIN, Soil Conservationist There will be a demonstration! of the latest conservation Equip ment on the Alfred Farm four miles north of Bayboro on N. C.' 304, in Pamlico County on Thurs day, October 31st from 10:00 A. M., to 4:00 P. M. The public is invited to attend. The demonstration is being sponsored by the Supervisors of the Lower Neuse Soil Conserva tion District. Gregory-Poole Equipment Co., South Morehead Road, New Bern is furnishing the machinery. A new Land Clearing Blade which cuts trees and brush off close to the ground will be shown. This blade is cutting costs in clearing for pasture and for right of way and reservoir clearing. Os major interest will be the equipment and methods used in Land Forming and Water Control. Land Forming is a term used to designate the re-shaping of fields for better surface drainage and/or surface irrigation, and for better row alignment. The first step in land forming is the removal of spoil banks from existing main ditches, using a tractor-scraper combination to remove the dirt and to place it in Jow spots in the field. All dirt re moved from the ditches will be used to fill in low spots in the intervals between the laterals. Levels will be run at 100 foot spacing and marked to show cut or fill to give a final surface which will give proper row drain age. The stakes will also be marked to show grades need to form a crowning effect to give side drainage to the laterals. High spots will be taken off with the tractor-scraper combi nation and deposited in the low spots. The tractor-scraper com bination and a motor grader will be used to smooth the intervals. A fifty foot Land Planer pulled by a 100 H.P. Track type tractor, will be used to give the “Final Finish” to the intervals. This is very important in Land Forming. It eliminates the possi bility of water collecting in poc kets any where. After fields are land formed, proper maintenance is important. A reversible 2-way, four disc plow is to be demonstrated to show good maintenance land prepara tion.
