The three - night school will be held in First Methodist Church, Hertford, at 7:30 O’clock each evening, and is opbn to all Methodists in Cho wan and Perquimans Counties. Mr. Jerome is a native of Gatesville, son of the Rev. C. P. Jerome, who was a member of the N. C. Conference as an ac tive preacher for 41 years. A graduate of Duke University, he also holds an STM degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York. He is a member of the Board of M ; ssions of the North Carolina Conference and district missionary secretary for the Rocky Mount District. Among his pastorates have been the following: Webb Avenue. Burlington: Enfield - Whitakers: Trinity, Wilmington: Hayes Bar ton, Raleigh: Centenary. New Bern; First. Elizabeth City, and r.( w in Roanoke Rapids. Other courses to be offered in the school, which is an annual affair, will be "How to Improve the Church School." taught by THE CANE-SPREE MAN ] By JOHN D. McCREADY c— ,* Don’t judge by appearances. And don't underestimate a man. He may have hidden resources that will surprise you. Cane spree time at the college had came, and feeling was run ning high between the freshmen and the sophomores. A crowd from the two large classes had gathered in the gym to watch their mates as they took part in gruelling contests of strength, skill and dogged endurance. A cane spree is a struggle be tween two men for the posses sion of a thick, stout cane. It begins as the contestants stand facing each other, each gripping the cane with both hands. At a signal they try to wrest the cane away. Twisting, jerking, rolling over each other on the mat almost every imaginable device is resorted to in the ei fort to wrench the stick out of the hands of the opponent. Few varieties of athletics are mohe rugged. A momentary hush fell over the crowd as the first two an tagonists were called to the mat. The soph was a tall awkward looking fellow—anything but at tractive. The first-year men beamed with satisfaction as they saw their representative advanc to meet him—a handsome, well built freshman, glorious in his self-confidence. They were sure that by superior strength he would make quick work of his ungainly opponent, and thereby' humble the whole sophomore class. The signal was given and the struggle began. The freshman, handsome as a future "Mr. America,” intended to win the contest in short order —that was plain. He jerked at the cane, and twisted it vigorously. But the other man was not td .be immediately overcome. He held on grimly. Then the robust freshman pinned him to the mat and tried by rolling over him and butting him in the stomach to make him give up the stick. But the bony soph gripped the cane like a human bulldog who didn’t know how to let go. The sophomores, breathlessly CAN YOU [afford Ij2<t a day? The unexpected winner that j day was as homely in appear- , ance as a great American whose j birthday comes in the month of February Abraham Lincoln. | And he was as tenacious of pur- , pose as the rail-splitter Presi- 1 dent. He was known as a hard student. By a strange coinci ! dence he sat in one of his \ classes next to a studept whose name was Shirk. If that fact had any influence on him, it , was only to spur him on to greater industry. In his habits of study, work was his watch word. To his religious duties the cane-spree victor brought the same earnestness and Steadfast ness of purpose that marked ibim in every other field. Those j who watched him taking part in the young people's activities of his church—in a suburban ; community near the vast city I where he attended college— were reminded of a passage in the O’d- Testament. ‘'Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do. do it I with thv might,” I Going through college, with I God as his guide, this young i man, who seemed to freshmen eyes so unpromising, had prom ise after promise fulfilled in his life. After an outstanding rec . ord as a student he was invited to join the faculty of his great university in one of its scien tific departments. ' Lesson Text: Mark 10:32-45. ' This lesson should impress • adults with the fact that Jesus ’ defined greatness in terms of un selfish service. The Scriptures we are study- j • ing today point out Jesus’ inter-' pretation of greatness. When James and John, two of his dis • ciples, requested him to let them sit. one at his right hand and one at his left hand, he told them this; besuest was not his to give, i 1 That it must be saved for those! who were prepared to receive it. j We read, further, of how the oth- j I er ten disciples waxed indignant! at James and John, wdiereupon Jesus adjured them to serve each J • other, saying: “For the Son of; man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life J • as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45). Jesus was preaching humility of spirit, as he had preached this ' same theme many times before. The desire to be great, and to obtain glory, is a strong force in j lus all. If it is abused, however. I it must be counted among the evils mankind must eliminate to; survive. However, Jesus reeog- j nized the fact that the desire to 1 Chowan County Churches EDENTON BAPTIST REV. R N. CARROLL. Greatness is a wyrH that needs definition there arc so ver) many constructions which can be put upon it, all varying to the same degree that individuals vary. It can refer to size, as for j example, a great ship, or a house lor anv other object. In the sense in which we use here, however, it doesn't refer to size. We arc using it in connection with that ; quality of being which is digni fied, noble, majestic, and worthy. 1 That is what Jesus meant bv greatness. These are spiritual qualities that are hard to come by in these days of stress and ! strain. ■ It seems fairly certain that Je i sus had found a stream of person ■ al nourishment coining into his i life through his service to other people. There is the ring of per sonal experience in what he says. His service to others gave him no | power, wealth or position, even ; by the wildest stretch of imagi j nation! But his service to others j did give him nobility, inward dignity, spiritual majesty and mental worthiness. This is the greatness obtained in service. To minister in Jesus' stead or to take his yoke upon us does not mean that we are to merely imi j tate his outward acts.
