The situa tion which has arisen and has become a matter of much public attention has come about in part due to the fact that we have entirely too much surplus grain stored under our agricul tural program. The investiga tion will enter into not only the reported abuses of the farm pro gram but will look into fac tors that have produced the abuses. Today we have a de mand for price supports for cer tain crops which producers are unwilling to submit to controls. North Carolina is concerned with agricultural programs which govern chiefly tobacco, WAKE UP RARIN’TOGO Without Nagging Backache Now! These programs have been more or less used as a model for the 1962 Farm bill. I think the in vestigation will be a healthy thing for agriculture. Tariff Bill The House Ways and Means Committee has re ported the Trade Expansion Act for 1962. The House is expected to vote on the bill sometime in June. Although the current law governing tariffs and trade will expire on June 30th, the bill is rjot likely to be presented in the Senate Finance Committee before July. Considerable hear ings before the Senate Commit tee will make it likely that the bill will not come to the Senate floor before August. Congress has in times past in like sit uations involving the tariff laws granted by resolution a temporary extension of the cur rent law until both Houses can act on the bill. A bill of this ftind is one that covers such a wide area that it is difficult to predict what it will contain on final passage. There is known to be substantial objection to one part of the Trade bill which ELIZABETH CITY DAYS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, JUNE I AND 2 '350 OO IN PRIZES S (Certificates Redeemable At Any Participating Store} P| IIQ MANY OTHER MERCHANDISE PRIZES rLUU AT THE COOPERATING STORES ~I7.ARETH CITY DAYS IT INF 1.2 " nF Good For Sign 4 |T|l I Vjl |1 Deposit Awarded YS||i M Valuable Below 111 BoK . Secretary of Defense McNamara Thank You! I want to take this means to express my thanks and deep appreciation to the voters of the First Township in re-electing me County Commissioner in Saturday’s Democratic Primary Election. The confidence reposed in me will be an incentive for me to put forth my best efforts in the interest of the welfare and progress of Chowan County as a whole. W. E. BOND jhas proposed the elimination of I eight national guard and reserve i divisions. I am opposed to- the curtailment of the strength of the national guard and reserve units. I think that in times past they have proven that they ' are a bulwark of strength to I the nation. They have rendered | a great service in all of our ;wars of the past generation. There is a constant “see-saw” battle that goes on about the national guard and the regular ■ forces. The Eisenhower Admini ! s,tration once insisted on cutting the regular forces very substan tially. Secretary of Defense Mc- Namara apparently plans exact ly the opposite approach. He j wants the “see-saw” to go down •on the other end and rise on ; the regular forces. Frankly, I i think that we need both the ! regular forces and the national ! guard and reserve divisions, be cause we are living in a very precarious world. The only se ceurity we have lies in the | strength of our defense forces. I think we have witnessed too j much of this constant battle to curtail and then later reestablish j these forces. There ought to be I a policy of continuity in this area of national defense.
