| AROUND THE FARMS SIN CHOWAN COUNTY r By C. W. OVERMAN, Chowan County Aflanl Copper-Sulfur Duet To Pea nuts: The first application oi copper-sulfur dust to control the leafspot disease on peanuts should be applied this >yeek. Fifteen (15) pounds of dust per acre is sufficient for the first two applications. Duster nozzles should be set just above the pea nut plants so that the dust is put into the plants with as little driftage as possible. An appli cation should be made every ten days to two week§, depending upon the weather. Don't Apply Diazinon Yet: We must remember -that the activity of diazinon lasts for -approxi mately sixty days. Therefore, if diazinon is applied too early its effectiveness can die out before the peanut crop is made and there may still be worm trouble in peanuts. As soon as we feel the proper time for applying di azinon is here, we will notify all growers by mail as well as through this column. Cotton Insect Control: Many cotton growers started dusting for boll weevil at the 8-leaf stage of growth. If cotton was dusted every five days as rec ommended, the fourth and last dusting of this first, Schedule should be complete. r The next dusting should begin about July 23, mak ing four more applications at five day interval^. 400 Bushel Sweet Potato Club: The 300 Bushel Sweet Potato Club has been raised to 400 bushels. A large number of growers have qualified in the 300 bushel class and several in the 400 bushel class. The com mittee has raised the base to 400 bushels, setting the star a little higher to be shot at. Side-dressings of 8-0-24 side dresser should be made until at least 500 pounds of side-dressing per acre has been applied. We have had some heavy rains which, no doubt, will leach out much of the nitrogen. If sweet potato fields begin to show a slight yellow cast, an applies- Straight ■ * r Kentucky ■ a* ! - Bourbon *2§o mmsS&Ssibi •-< MHB888» ’ \f( lT\. There will be no need to culti vate the nitrate of soda in as the next rain will take it into the soil. Edenton and County Suffer From Rainfall Continued from Fage 1# Section 1 weather does not kill the roots, according to Overman. Low spots where the rain collected and stood were hurt the worse. Extent of damages will de pend on the type of weather the state and county receive during the .next few weeks, reported Overman. He said that he hoped the damage in Chowan County would not exceed a quarter of a million dollars. J. H. Conger, Sr., weatherman for the county, reported early this week that 10.96 inches of rain fell during June and this total fell on 17 different days. In Edenton, a heavy thunder storm that preceded the north easter last Tuesday forced sev eral streets to be blocked for a time and police to erect detours around pools of water. Be leaguered Providence Baptist Church was struck by lightning which caused a fire, but the blaze was quickly brought under control by Wlenton firemen. Overall, it was one of the biggest rainfalls to ever hit Edenton and the county in such a short time, and damages far exceeded some of the hurricanes.
