I Others say the Bible isn’t true I ■ because men wrote it. Listen, I beloved, the Bible is true and s*. God doesn’t make mistakes. , I We make mistakes and are still i making them. You have to be lieve all of the Bible or none of it. If the Bible wasn’t true, we would have no hope. God made us from dust and we return to dust and that would be it. The Bible is true and it holds life for all that believe. He said “If we call on Him, thou shalt be saved.” Note “thou shalt” not 1 maybe but shalt be saved. Not • a week or a year, but forever and ever. God doesn’t care what we think of His Word. If the Bible says one thing, , don’t try to bend the Bible to fit you, but do what it says. If we don’t follow the Bible it means death. Jesus died on the cross for us. Can’t you surrender your life to Him? Sell out to Him today. H% is calling you. Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is call ing, calling. Oh sinner come home. The Bible says “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling not accords ! ing to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” . - ■ —2 Timothy 1:9. REV. W. W. LANIER. Paslor \Zlade Cduted - Qoing a Ha 6il Sunday School Lesson THE TEST OF FAITH International Sunday School Lessen For August 18 Memory Selection: “By faith ! Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and .he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son.”—Hebrews 11:17. Lesson Text: Genesis 21 through 25. Today, in our study of the Book of Genesis, we endeavor to lead adults to consider how Abra ham’s faiih stood up under test ing and to learn how Christians can respond to God in faith. The verses we are studying today must be understood in the light of previous chapters and the prevailing practice of Bib lical times. Isaac was the ful fillment of one of God’s cove nantal promises, for through him the assurance of multitudes of descendants could be accom plished. Hence, many of Abra ham’s hopes were bound up in Isaac’s continued living and fruitfulness as a father. Con; trasted with this was the very strong emphasis of Abraham’s neighbors upon human sacrifice. It was in these circumstances that Abraham felt called by God to prove his devotion by offer ing the one thing of greatest worth to him—the son of his be loved wife Sarah. He respond ed in faith, setting out to do this tiagic deed. And in these events he acquired a new insight his people were never to forget; hu- ( man sacrifice profanes rather \ than honors the name of God. Abraham believed the sacri- j fice of Isaac was Gad’s wish. ; And, although his heart must have broken, he prepared him self to do God’s will implicitly. No more perfect obedience cun be imagined. Can we please j God today with less than per- i feet obedience? It does not come as clearly as we would like, and are often confused as to whether we are following our own misguided impulses or a divine imperative. We must always be asking our selves if some idea is really God’s purpose. We shall sel dom have sharp, unmistakable > answers, but these guidelines may be helpful: If a proposed l action, is in conflict with God’s total revelation in the Bible, and ! especially as seen in Jesus’ life, then it must be questionable, j God does not urge us to violate j the moral and ethical principles i characteristic of his teaching. [ Rather, he calls us regularly to live by these principles. If we ! are tempted to do otherwise, | claiming that it is in the name ’] of the Lord, we would do well! to stop and take stock of the entire situation. Neither does God call us to violate human personality. Al though none of us today would think that it is God’s will to sacrifice a human life, we do sometimes sacrifice another’s character or reputation. Even for supposedly good ends, this cannot be justified. It has been | written, “God moves in mys-! i terious ways.” While his truths! are not always immediately j clear, ultimately his purposes will not be contradictory to the j highest and purest emotions of men. The Bible in its full J I sweep reveals an ever-widening : 1 understanding and revelation of j | God as love. We must always | be alert to see what that love \ i means for our situation, for our i lives. In his bleakest hour—the mo | ment when it appeared that his j son must die—Abraham received i a great insight.
