PAGE TWO —SECTION ORE AROUND THE FARMS ■TOMIN CHOWAN EOF NT V I c. W. OVERMAN. Chowan Countv Aoenl Results of Peanut All-Practice Demonstration: The ten peanut ' alUpractice demonstrations con ducted over Chowan County show an average yield increase or over 1,000 pounds per acre over the 1962 harvested yield on those same farms. Yields on demonstrations ranged from 2,- 284 pounds to 3,430 pounds, av eraging 2,938 pounds per acre. Four of the ten made over 3,000 f pounds per acre. Fanners conducting these dem i onstrations were W. T. Forehand, , Russell H. Byrum, Percy L. t ! Smith, John L. Parrish, Tom O. t Asbell, J. N. Jordan, Moody L. Chappell, Jr„ Gilbert Hare, Ed | gar. M. Howell and Ernest E. Boyce. These growers gave us ex-client cooperation. We were very pleased to see , all of these growers using some of the recommended practices, tiiey had not used before, on their entire crop this year. Some of them used most of the same practices employed in the dem onstrations. The crop yield on all of these farms was improv ed and on many it was about equal to that 1 of the demonstra tion plot. It was necessary to have ma terials and equipment for cer tain practices in these demon strations approximately S4of worth of materials and equip ment used were furnished by lo cal dealers and area distributors. Equipment was furnished by Hobbs Implement Company, By- 1 ruin Implement and Truck Com- j pany, Edenton Tractor and Im , p’onent Company and U. S. SEAGRAM’S V.O. County Peanut Yield for 1953 Looks Good: Handy West of the A.S.C.S. office informs me that the 1963 peanut marketing turn ed in to date indicate a Chowan County yield possibly a little better than that of 1 1962. . Os course, there are many more cards to come in. At present the cards show there are more farm yields above 3,000 pounds per acre. In 1958 the average yield of peanuts in Chowan County was 2,032 pounds per acre. , The highest up to that time. In 1961 our average yield was I,Bo' pounds. The yield rose to 2,181 pounds in 1962, passing the T.t in ’66” goal of 2,100 pounds. Naturally, good growing sen sons in 1962 and 1963 eontribut ed to our good peanut yields The use of good production prac tices played a very important jart. General comments of growers indicate that there has ieeu a considerable increase in the use of recommended prac tices. Let’s keep up the good work in 1964 and keep the yield and quality climbing. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a most Happy and New Year. THE CHOWAN HERALD. EDENTON. NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. DECEMBER 2G, 19e3.
