PAGE EIGHT r—SECTION TWO Civi Defense Plamung Key To Survival By MURRAY D. ASHLEY Edtnlon Civil Defense Director V In last week’s civil defense survival information the ques tion was asked “What would you do if word was received that this country was under attack?” Also, we pointed out that no matter how much planning that might be accomplished by the federal governmest, you, the local John and Jane Doe, must learn what to and what not to do if this country is ever cov ered by deadly radio-active fallout. You must remember that to wait until this information is needed and then seek advice is to invite death for you, your family and loved ones. We must store survival knowledge before it is needed, just as we would buy insurance on our family or homes before we have sickness, disaster or death. Civil De fense is insurance. It is insur ance against disaster. So that we might better un derstand the problem we may be faced with some day in the future, let’s go through the chain of events that take place with the detonation of a nuclear weapon. The detonation of a nuclear weapon on or near the ground causes large quantities of earth and debris to be forced up into the fireball and the re sulting mushroom shaped cloud. This dirt and debris is mixed with the nuclear fission products of the bomb and made highly radioactive. This mushroom cloud and de bris may reach an altitude of 15 miles or more before level j Frankly Speaking | [ By FRANK ROBERTS J “A Hard Day’s Night”, will be the title of the Beatles’ first full length film. They portray them selves in a movie for which ( Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the music . . . or whatever. Many people, including yours truly, unwittingly signed a pe tition to “bring the Bible back to the schools”. That’s how the phrasing went as groups of teenagers approached citizens and asked for signatures. However, the Bible was never taken out of the schools, and the only re sult the petition would have if it were successful (and that’s doubtful, fortunately) would be to force Bible reading, prayer and so on, rather than make it j a'voluntary thing. People will sign almost anything that's shov ed in front of them, particular ly if done so by youngsters. Alan Funt on “Candid Camera'' proved this by gathering hun dreds and hundreds of signatures, petitioning people to allow Es kimoes to engage in seventeen snowball fights a year, rather than only fifteen. Something like that. How long would it take to see the New York World's Fair? Too long. There’s too much to see. It’s doubtful that residents of the city can even get to sec everything in complete detail. The out-of-towner will have to have a good supply of both time and money. Fair officials say it will take at least a week, sight seeing from 9 A. M-, to midnight, to see just the top attractions It would take two weeks to com- ' CONFIDENTIAL This may be’news, but we confidential files. They are maintained for your convenience and protection. The earth and debris particles in the cloud vary in size from fine powder to large grains. And it is these par ticles, called fallout, which act as the source of radiation. They are like X-rays except many times stronger. These rays dam age or kill body cells. There are three different kinds of radiation associated with fallout Alpha Betta and Gamma rays. While alpha and betta rays may be dangerous if they are ingested through con taminated food, water or air— from the shelter standpoint they present no problem. However, gamma rays, like X-rays, are highly penetrating and can cause serious damage to living body cells or tissue. While mil lions of people in this country in or near target areas would die if nuclear war should ever come, millions of others could survive if they only knew how to protect themselves from ra dioactive fallout which would spread many miles from the tar get area. . A few hours of your time is all that is required to learn the facts of survival. We have no magic pill that can be taken for survival. But if you'll enroll in our civil defense education course on medical self-help and survival, we’ll teach you the es sential facts of survival in the nuclear age. Let’s plan today to survive tomorrow. Next week: Key shelter fac tors and shielding from gamma radiation. -1 plete the bulk of the lair. To see it in complete detail would take a month. Os course, those' estimates don’t take into account , standing in line at some of the top attractions. There are 28 miles of walks, and that doesn’t count the considerable walking ( inside the various exhibits. Be that as it may, it’s the most fas cinating and educational way a family could spend their time. I visited the 1939-40 World’s Fair every day after school and on week-ends, when I was about 12 and 13. since I only lived about seven minutes away by ; subway. It was unforgettable . . . and this will be even more , so, I imagine. Is Richard Cardinal Cushing ' for or against the Birch Society? ; That’s the question of the hour. -. Jack Lemmon and Tony-Cur tis are starring in what Should ibe a fascinating movie. It’s call ed “The Great Race”, and -eoo cerns the greatest around-the world competition of all time. It will be filmed in, amongst other places, Canada, Alaska, Oregon, Colorado, Austria and France. I can wish Keith Reeve only the very, very best. This fine gentleman is sacrificing very, very much, materially, to enter the ministry. Our prayers are with him. I’ll say this: if he be comes as great a preacher as he was a lawyer in that play, he’ll i have no problems. I know that ; better than anyone else, of i course. Some time ago when I wrote i something about red infiltration • of the civil rights movement, I got jumped on for having too lively an imagination. I even got J. Edgar Hoover quoted at me. Now Mr. Hoover has come . out with this statement: “Com THE CHOWAN HERALD. EPEHTOW. MONTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY, APRIL 30, IM4. munist influence does exist in the Negro movement” In Janu ary, Hoover testified that the Communist party tries to expand its influence among Negroes and particularly, in Mr. Hoover’s own words: “ . . . has sought ways and means to exploit the militant forces of the Negro civil rights movement.” He explained that the reds try to use what often are legitimate complaints and grievances, for the advance ment of Communist objectives. Hoover explained that the Com munist influence in the Negro movement can be the means through which large masses are caused to lose perspective on the issues involved and, without rea lizing it, succumb to the Com munistv Party’s propaganda lures. The Beatles will give “con certs”, in Denmark and Holland . . . then go to Hong Kong, Au stralia and New Zealand. They’ll be in this country beginning the 19th of August with their first appearance slated for the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Today’s musical biography: Sonny Rollins.
