This Is The Life \ By DONALD THOMAS | Immanuel Baptist Church TRAINING A CHILID We send our children to the public scnools, but do you send them to Sunday School? They should get a good education, but how about their Christian educa tion? We as parents should make our children go to Sunday School. You don’t keep them from the public schools. A child sees his parents staying home, read ing the paper, watching TV, going fishing or drinking the devil’s fire water and say “Sunday School is not for me. We should get out of bed and take our children to Sunday School. A parent is responsible for the training of his children. Some day, old man or woman, God is going to hold you account able for the training you gave or denied your children. The home should have Christ in it. Have you received Jesus as your Savior? Are you living the life that is pleasing to Jesus or is it Satan? God has only loaned us our children for a little while. The Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”— Proverbs 22:6. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY MAY 12, 1966. Destruction of the House [of David was Queen Atha- Iliah’s goal. To this end, she [had all possible claimants to »the throne brutally slain. But the young king’s physi cal welfare was not the old priest’s sole concern. He tended the spiritual needs of the child with loving dedi cation and care, bringing him up in God’s ways, and guid ing him throughout a reign of forty years, to the end that Israel prospered. It is sad to relate that with the death of the venera ble priest, Joash reverted to the ways of his father, and the instruction and influence of Jehoiada became largely undone. Nevertheless, the responsi ble ways in which the old man discharged his duties to the youth contain valuable lessons to us as mature Christians and guardians of tre welfare of the nation’s youth today. Environment and example of the adult members of the family circle play a great part in the shaping of the character of the young. Re spect for God’s holy ordin ances and the rights and feel ings of others should be taught in the home and in the church from an early age, laying the bedrock upon which a Christian life can be built. Just as God directed the infant Joash’s threatened ex istence into the loving and capable hands of Jehoiada and his wife, so He has en trusted our children to our care. They come to us like a clean slate, and what they have written on that slate when they are returned to their Heavenly Father de pends, in large measure, on our stewardship of them. Does our stewardship meas ure up to that exhibited by Jehoiada? It takes a fair bit of “character building’’ before two youngsters get to the point where they’re happy to go fifty-fifty on so much as a bottle of pop! Fred and Marilyn, as it happens, have learned a lot about sharing in church. For, many years ago, Christ clearly demonstrated that man should be neither selfish nor greedy, and that to live success fully he must learn to give not only of himself, but of his possessions. In a small, childlike, but completely joyous way, Fred and Marilyn are putting these teachings into practice just as in many more serious ways, they will be putting other teachings of the Church into use, throughout their lives. rbese Religious Messages Are IVliiislied In The, Chowan Herald and Are Sponsored By the Following Business Establishments This Space Sponsored By A Friend Os The Churches In Chowan County Edenton Savings & Loan Association Where r uu oave DOES Make a Difference EDENTON.
