Soil Testing Important If Farmers Desire To Increase Crop Yields Producing high crop yields requires a complete evaluation of all factors which combine to make up the final yield. Today’s farmers must take advan tage of all technology, in cluding both services and products, if they are to be efficient producers, accord ing to C. W. And, although it is true, it may often falter, still, it is so basic that it has GOT to return, to make this world acceptable through- trials and tribulations. The faith that motivates our church can be demon strated by its awareness to unlimited opportunities and taking advantage of them. A new community about to be brought into being provides fertile ground for a new church, to minister to the needs of the ex panding community; a soul won to God can often be found in surroundings of poverty and disease. Aware ness of the needs of our fellowmen is the key here. For only as we are aware, can we propagate the seeds of our faith. Faith has many faces; it is demonstrated in per sonal concern, in the con viction that one has some thing worth sharing; it will not claim glory for itself, but for the Supreme Be ing; and it enables the one who reaps the benefits of Christian ministry to glori fy Jesus Christ (These comments am based on outlines of the Inter national Sunday School Lessens, copyrighted by the International Connell of Religions Ednootton, and need by permission). Having your soil tested is the best way to make sure that fertility will not be the factor that limits your yield levels this year. The Soil Testing Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture will analyze your soil samples and make fertilizer and lime suggest ions for the crops that you plan to grow. These sug gestions are designed to en able you to achieve good yields under normal cli matic conditions that exist in North Carolina. To achieve top yields, the farmer must also follow other recommended cultur al practices in addition to the soil test suggestions. Proper seedbed preparation, selecting the right hybrid or variety, planting at the optimum date, proper plant population, weed and in sect control, and efficient methods of harvesting are some of the factors that require sound management decisions of the operator in order to achieve top yields. So if you want your crop yields to be at or near their maximum potential, plan your farming opera tions carefully, don’t over look cultural practices that may limit yields and take advantage of the services offered by the Soil Testing Division. Soil sampling supplies are available at your local County Agri cultural Extension Office. The time you spend in taking soil samples will pay off when harvest time comes around and that added yield is turned into added dollars in your pock ets.
