Many people in Edenton will long remember the Triangle Case and Service Station as a beloved land mark and institution. It has long stood for con viviality and fellowship among kindred souls, and a place of culinary dis pensation of warm food and warm hearts. Yet it is to be no more; it will be removed from the scene and its place in the sun will be a thing of the past. Soulless bulldozers and construction robots will raze its walls and lay the ground bare for the me chanized trod of Progress’ heavy boots. Over the period of my lifetime, I have painted many pictures; yet I can’t recall of having painted but one that did not con tain at least a single fig use. I am no art critic, yet it is my contention that a painting, above all, should contain life. A landscape per se can be beautiful, but with me there can be no beauty without life. Somewhere in a landscape there should be people, a figure on a lonely path or beneath the trees. Be it a seascape, there should be a figure on a headland or the shore, with the wind whipping about them. The majesty of the sea and the enorm ity of nature is then given life. There should be con flict, man and the sea, or the rugged hills and the forests dwarfing the puni ness of man. For a‘ good painting is drama, and good drama should have life and conflict. This landscape I mentioned above, containing no life— I am tempted to take my brush and spread a picnic cloth and basket under the cool of the trees, a couple THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1967 of figures, and kids, and a dog.
