What are some kinds of retail and service es tablishments in which the minimum wage and over time requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act do not apply? A. The minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Stand ards Act do not apply to any retail or service estab more than 50 per cent of its sales within the state in which the establish ment is located and is not a covered enterprise, or if it is in such an enterprise, grosses less than $250,000 annually, exclusive of spe cified taxes. The smaller hotels, motels and restau rants would qualify for this exemption. Gasoline service establishments that have less than $250,000 in annual sales, exclusive of certain excise taxes, may also be exempt as a retail or service establishment. C THE CHOWAN HERALD The Yellowed Pages Os The Chowan Herald 30 YEARS AGO Ground was officially broken for the new Eden ton School auditorium when Thomas Chears, Sr., chairman of the Edenton Board of Trustees, remov ed the first shoveful of ground in the presence of D. M. Warren, chairman of the County* Commis sioners, Mayor J. H. Mc- Mullan and Superintendent John A. Holmes. Pete Everett was voted the most outstanding play er on the Edenton High School football team and was presented a trophy at a Lions Club meeting by Coach David Holton. Contrary to a previous report, Bell Battery Chap ter of the United Daugh ters of the Confederacy was not disbanded. Fol lowing the report, mem bers of the small group got busy and persuaded Mrs. Sidney McMullan to serve as president to suc ceed Mrs. George P. By rum, who refused to serve any longer. Though the County Commissioners were con fronted by a strong dele Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, January 11, 1968. gation, the Commissioners failed to make any move toward equipping Chowan County Court House with an up-to-date and safe heating system, where two fires had been recently averted. The Commission ers advanced the opinion that the project was too costly, but did agree to take some precautions in order to prevent the build ing being damaged or de stroyed by fire. Prospects for a celebra tion dedicating the new Edenton armory were very gloomy. Chowan County Commissioners refused to make an appropriation for the purpose. J. A. Woodard was re ported to be desperately ill and considerable con cern was felt regarding his chances of recovery. Due to a cold snap, work was slackened on the new vehicular bridge 'across Albemarle Sound. A play, “Lena Rivers,” was presented at Chowan High School by members of the faculty. John Edward Waff, Sr., 74, prominent commercial fisherman of the Emperor section, died at his home after a period of failing health. Henry R. Sawyer, 42- year-old resident of Tyrrell County, and a World War veteran, was found dead at Greenfield with a gun shot in the top of his head. Dr. M. P. Whichard ruled death was caused by self inflicted wounds. E. W. Spires, who was selected by Gov. Clyde Hoye as chairman of the Governor’s Hospitality Committee for Chowan County, named his local committee which included 16 associates in carrying cut the purpose of the campaign which was prim arily to welcome and be stow hospitality upon any visitors in our midst. Town Councilmen were reminded of the crowded condition in Edenton’s business section, who sug gested that more general parking be done on the town lot at the corner of Broad and Water Streets. Town Council appropri ated sls for two prizes for I the best outside Christmas decoration in Edenton. Judge R. Hunt Parker, presiding over a term of Chowan Superior Court, lost his patience with one of the juries, when he in structed a verdict of guilty in a case involving A. R. Chappell in connection with slot machines. Wood Privott, spokesman for the jury, who was summoned twice by the judge, said a decision had not been reached. “I don’t want 12 such men to sit on a jury in my court,” rebuked Mr. Parker, “you are dismissed, get out and go home.” The jurymen did just that and lost no time in doing it. What was no doubt the largest attended wedding ever to be held in Edenton took place when a cere mony was performed on the Taylor Theater stage. Theresa Hughes of Merry Hill and Raymond Bunch of Evans Church section were united in marriage by Rev. J. O. Walton of the Green’s Cross Baptist Church. Edenton’s newest store opened in the Nejam Build ing when Ralph Parrish began operating an associ ate store of the Western Auto Supply Company of Kansas City. Keeping in step with other towns, Edenton Po lice Department was equipped with a radio for the purpose of receiving police calls. 20 YEARS AGO William Privott, receiver for the Edenton Naval Air Station, presented to Town Council a tentative contract made with A. R. Bridge ford of East Brookfield, Mass., for the latter to inaugurate a flight school at the base. Freeman at the Methodist Church; Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Dunbar, who opened a new Western Auto Store; Mr. and Mrs. Monk Chum, the former new manager of the A & P Store and Halsey Hardwood Com pany, engaged in erecting its primary buildings and expected to be in full swing by February or March. At chapel exercises at Edenton High School, Bobby Byrum was award ed a beautiful trophy for being the most valuable player on the Edenton High School’s 1947 football team. James Monds was de clared winner in the 4-H corn contest, sponsored by Edenton Lions Club. Monds grew 107.45 bushels of corn an on acre of ground. At a joint meeting of the Band Committee of the Edenton Parent-Teach er Association, Ben Steph ensdki of Suffolk was em ployed as the instructor of the Edenton Band. J. R. Byrum was elected president of the Chowan County Wildlife Club. Mrs. Inglis Fletcher was elected vice president of the North Carolina Society for the Preservation of An tiquities at a meeting held in Raleigh. Rev. W. C. Francis was elected master of Unanim ity Lodge No. 7, A. F. & A. M. A colored Hospital Aux iliary was organized and a meeting was called in Brown-Carver Library, re questing all persons inter ested in becoming mem bers to attend. Latimore Ballard, 35- year-old Negro, was held in Chowan County jail without bond, charged with breaking into the home of Charlie Gay and stealing $730. R. Mayne Allbright, can didate for Governor in the Democratic primary elec tion, was a visitor in Edenton in his trailer. In order to raise funds •for the benefit of the lunch room, the Parent- Teacher Association of the Edenton colored high school sponsored a queen contest. The United States Civil Service Commission an nounced an examination to fill the position of rural mail carrier at Tyner. Daniel Reaves was elect ed president of the Chowan County State College Alumni Club. Due to the illness of A1 Owens and the death of B. H. Smith, J. T. Layton was employed as a driver for the Edenton Fire De partment. The junior class at Cho wan High School present ed a three-act comedy, “Under Western Skies.” Dr. J. W. Warren sent a letter to The Herald in which he expressed oppo sition about no parking signs on West Queen Street. Instead, he sug gested stop lights at four of the most traveled street intersections. David Hervey, president cf the Hervey Foundation, sub-lessee of Edenton Nav al Air Station, informed Mayor L. H. Haskett that lack of action on the part of Town Council prevented the concern to go forward with their business without continued embarrassment and restrictions resulting from what he charged were groundless charges.
