;—B PAGE SIX THIS IS Know it - injoy it- Protect it! On May 30, 1967, a few men from Edenton and Chowan County met and decided to try to organize a wildlife club for Chowan County. A meeting was planned for June 23 in the Rocky Hock Community Building. Dewey Wells, district director, attended this meeting to offer encourage ment and a helping hand. Officers were elected and the first official club meeting was set for September 7. A goal of 50 members was suggested and a dove hunt planned. At the September meeting the club was named the Albemarle Wildlife Club and membership was not confined to Chowan County. At this meet ing Turner Battle, executive director. X. C. Wildlife Federation, spoke to the club. Conservation and safety have been stressed in the club along with a plan ned program of enjoyment for the members. Some of the projects planned and executed by the club are: A project to rid Albemarle Sound and Edenton Bay of dangerous stakes. A dove hunt in September held on the farm of Adrain Smith. Game Warden Rob Evans estimated 200 people enjoyed this hunt. A skeet shoot was held Xovember 12. A gun safety demonstration on the proper use of guns was held for young people of the community on December 28. Movies on recognition of game, safety in hunting and on conservation have been shown at meetings. The club has emphasized and publicized conservation and safety through the local press and radio. The managing editor of Wildlife Magazine, Duane Raver, attended one meeting and gave the program. Because of the interest in wildlife conservation and safety in the area mem bership in the club has grown from 16 to 71 members.
