Scott Blasted By Broughton RALEIGH Gubernator ial candidate Mel Brough ton was the featured speaker at a luncheon meeting of the Charlotte Civitan Club Friday and will spend the entire day visiting the voters in Meck lenburg County. Broughton made two major speeches last week on a 10-county tour in which he hit his opponent Bob Scott for not being frank with the voters and failing to keep his pledge to voters on making the job of lieutenant governor a full time post. In a speech made at Clin ton on Wednesday, Brough ton charged Scott had not fulfilled his pledge to the people and cited Scott’s high absenteeism from State Board of Education meetings as proof. Broughton told Kiwan ians in Washington on Tuesday that it “would be disastrous’’ for Democrats to elect Scott as a candi date for governor. He said Scott could not win the election in November. During the past week, Broughton toured Orange, Alamance, Nash, Martin, Bertie, Washington, Beau fort, Pender, Duplin and Sampson Counties. A campaign headquarters for Broughton was opened in Clinton during his visit there Wednesday. During the 10 - county tour Broughton stated to voters his stand for strong measures on law and or der, a wide-ranging road program, more pay for HiUlfbrik ~~ funeral home EDENTON. N. C. HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS DO YOUR SHARE: HELP STOP AIR POLLUTION The problem of air pol lution has been much in the news in recent years. For people who live in metropolitan areas—which now means most of us— air pollution becomes more apparent all the time. The American Medical Asso ciation points out that there’s little doubt that pollutants in the air aren’t good for us. Just how serious a health problem is air pollution is a ques tion still being studied. It has been associated with a number of various physical ills. We read about air pollu tion, but it seldom occurs to us that we can do something about it. Isn’t air pollution merely a mat ter for the factory with the belching smokestack, or the Broughton spoke at the annual farmer and industry meeting of the Lions Club at Kings Mountain Tues day night following a day long tour of Cleveland County. A general tour of Rock ingham County was made by Broughton on Thursday, during which he met with and talked to the citizens throughout that county. Sunday, Broughton was introduced at a perform ance of the Harlem Globe Trotters at East Carolina University at Greenville. apartment building with a smoky incinerator? Actually, there are some things we all can do to re duce air pollution: —Make it a point to know air pollution dang ers, and seek from elected representatives legislation to control these hazards. —An important source of air pollution is the ex haust pipe on the family auto. Keep the engine in good order. Have the ex haust system inspected reg ularly. This will not only reduce air pollution, it al so will save money on gasoline. —Keep your home furn ace in good working order. Have it checked annually, both for your safety and for the sake of the com munity. —Leaves, trash and rub bish should not be burned in metropolitan areas. Ar range for the proper agen cy to haul them away to a proper disposal point. Prevention of air pollu tion is a matter that must be met by the whole com munity. Proper laws are required where voluntary actions are inadequate Tight enforcement of these laws is essential. < We can anticipate that air pollution will continue to be much in the news in the years ahead. The prob lem will be solved much sooner if all of us become aware that It is serious and that all of us are in volved in its ultimate so lution. AGE SS OR OLDER? SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON | A LIVING RELATIONSHIP ■■■ ■ i International Sunday School Lesson for March 24 Memory Selection: “I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing.”—John 15:5. Lesson Text: John 15-16. - Search though we may, we will be hard put to i find any place where the ideal relationship be j tween Christ and the Christian is more beauti | fully portrayed than in the verses we are study | ing today. Christ, throughout His ministry on earth, al i ways conveyed His message to His listeners j through a series of word pictures that could be j related to their means of livelihood—for many ! of those who came to hear His teachings were j simple people, unlettered even by the standards j of those days—although well versed in the hard i ship of making a living, whether they wrested j it from the land, or the sea, or by enduring ach | ing backs and aching muscles from hard physi i cal labor. Many of them were familiar with work in the ! vineyards; they knew that if the vine was well | tended, it bore fruit. If it was neglected, it I withered and died, and families went hungry. | And so they were able to draw the comparison j that Jesus was making when He likened Him j self to the vine, God to the vine-dresser, and the i fruit to Christian virtues. They understood that j the dead branches of selfishness, hate, narrow | mindedness and injustice need to be pruned l away and banished from the Christian life. They | understood that the fruitful branches of love and | concern for fellowmen needed to be fostered and I cherished, nourished to a full and fruitful flow j ering. The close union of man with God was to j be the water that kept the vine alive, and the i purge of sinning in mankind. Today these words have a message for us, just | as surely as they had for the people of the time | in which they were uttered. | The true Christian, who openly and gladly ac | cepts Christ into his life, who dedicates that life i to the will of God, has a staunch friend and j keeper who will stay by his side though all the | temptations and calamities that might befall him. i WE must tend to CUR vine with dedication — |no one else can do it for us. For, although | there are many of us who claim to be Christians, i yet we have had no vital encounter with Christ. | We need to remedy this state of affairs, lest we— ! like Judas Iscariot —be cut away, as a dead limb ! is cut from the living vine. We must not content ourselves with a scarcity ' of fruit, just because we are too lazy or un- : willing to invest the totality of ourselves in our religion; for it will be noted that Christ was (and still is) interested in “much fruit,” We must be willing to invest boundless quan tities of love and obedience in our service to ; God if we are to be pleasing in His sight.
