Wheat Purchase Is Authorized Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman has au thorized local ASCS of fices in North Carolina to purchase wheat frem farm ers who are signed up in the 1968 wheat program. W. B. Denny, state execu tive director for the Agri cultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, said this decision was made to assure price support bene fits to North Carolina wheat growers. This action is necessary because of low wheat prices and the lack of adequate storage on most farms. Danny said the purchase price will be $1.36 per bushel. Storage costs will have to be deducted in the amount of not more than 11 cents per bushel. Farm ers can, therefore, expect to receive $1.25 per bushel for wheat delivered to the ASCS. Denny concluded by say ing that any farmer inter ested in delivering wheat to ASCS should contact their local ASCS county office. Many Disabled Hold Up Claims “There are many dis abled workers in this area who could receive social security payments by filing an application,” states Jack Tatem, manager of the so cial security district office in Greenville. Tatem pointed out that many disabled workers still put off filing a social security claim for months, and sometimes years, after they become disabled. In a few cases the disabled person loses some payments because of this delay. “Back payments” cannot be made for more than 12 months before the claim is filed, even though he may have been disabled for two or three years before this. To receive disability benefits under the social security law, two require ments must be met. First, the disability must be se vere enough that it pre vents the person from do ing any substantial gainful work. The condition must be expected to last for at least 12 months or to re sult in death. Secondly, the disabled person must have worked and paid into social security for at least five years in the 10-year period before he became disabled. For persons 31 or younger, less work Is required. Even though a person meets all these re quirements, however, he still must file a claim. Tatem emphasized that it is important to contact the social security office imme diately when disability oc curs. By filing early, a de. cision can be made on the claim and the first check will arrive on time. Also, by filing immediately after becoming disabled no back pay will be lost. For more information about disability or any so cial security matter, get in touch with your district office located at 207 Boyd Avenue, Greenville, N. C.
