From The Yellowed Pages Os Chowan Herald 30 YEARS AGO What was said to be the heaviest rain within the memory of older residents \ isited Edenton, resulting in several scenes similar to what one sees in news reels depicting floods in various parts of the coun try. Four Edenton ministers assured E. W. Spires, chair man of the Hospitality Committee of .Chowan County, that they would cooperate in every way possible to stress the im portance of hospitality in the churches, especially looking toward many tour ists expected to visit Eden ton during the summer. Paul Jones and his or chestra appeared at the Edenton armory to furnish music for a dance given for the benefit of the Eden ton Band. At a meeting of the Troop Committee of Eden ton Boy Scouts a central committee was named to solicit funds for the pur pose of sending Boy Scouts to camp. A spaghetti supper was served at the Cupola House for the benefit of the Cup ola House Association. In an effort to make n rapid and complete can vass for memberships in Edenton - Chowan Chamber of Commerce, Junius W. Davis was named chairman of a Membership Commit tee. The Ashley brothers and Roy Evans presented a black face comedy at Ry land school building. The entertainment was spons ored by the Woman's Club. Town Council passed a resolution to provide for the management of the Edenton armory which in cluded one member of Town Council, one a mem ber of the Board of Public Works and the third to be the local commander of the military company locat ed in the armory. The home of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Red Men of Pasquotank Tribe in Elizabeth City and Chowan Tribe of Edenton played a game of softball under the flood lights at Hicks Field. The Elizabeth City Red Men won a hard-fought game 12 to 11. Dr. M. P. Whichard was appointed health officer of Craven County with head quarters at New Bern. John A. Holmes express ed hope that $296,000 would be provided for a new high school on Hicks Field and additions to the colored school here from the great work relief bill with its $5,000,000,000 allotment for WPA projects throughout ihe country. Though unconscious for several days, James A. Woodard was still clinging 1 to a thin thread of life. Clayton Hollowell was elected sachem of Chowan ; Tribe of Red Men. Dr. Martin Wisely was elected president of Eden ton Lions Club. Red Cross swimming classes began at the base pool under the direction of Peter Carlton. Paul Harrell was ordain ed a Baptist minister at a leremony held at Rocky Hock Baptist Church. He accepted the position of assistant pastor oi the Cal vary Baptist Church at Roanoke, Va. North Carolina Red Men elected W. Jim Daniels Great Sachem of the order at the annual Great Coun cil meeting held at Nags Head. Joe Fulghum, Edenton Colonials’ outfielder, was the Albemarle League’s leading batter with an av erage of .516. The name of the Eden ton Supply Company on West Eden Street, purch ased by Guy C. Hobbs and A. C. Boyce, was changed to Hobbs Implement Com- ; pany. Miss Mary Winborne Evans of Edenton and Ar thur S. Cooper, Jr., of Ra leigh were united in marri age in Evans Methodist Church. Miss Julia Burton became the bride of Wiley R. Tay lor, Jr., in a beautiful candlelight ceremony in Edenton Methodist Church. Charles M. Harrell of Hertford purchased the Tank Gas Company from Raymond A. Cassett. In an automobile acci dent on the curve inside the Edenton Naval Air Station, seven persons were injured, including Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morgan and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Saund ers. Edenton’s first 4-H camp at Edenton Air Station got off to a splendid start with 84 boys and girls attend ing. Kermit L. Layton was elected commander of Ed Bond Post of the American Legion. An air show sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce attracted an- es tanated-..crowd of 3.000 at the Edenton base, where Congressman Herbert Bon ner was principal speaker. Pitching for Concord since the baseball season ( pened, Lester Jordan, lo cal speed ball artist, was persuaded to return to Edenton to join the Colo nials’ pitching staff. Mrs. F. F. Muth cele brated her 85th birthday and for the occasion she had all of her children present to enjoy a sauer kraut dinner. Mrs. W. C. Bunch re- turned from General Hos pital in Norfolk, where she underwent a serious opera tion. Mr. and Mrs. O. Bran ning "Perry of Edenton an nounced the engagement of their daughter. Norma Gib son, to Watts Dixon Poe of Chapel Hill. Water Still Washes The extension of a power line at last bringing the blessing of electricity to her remote mountain vil lage, a woman went into the city to purchase an electric washing machine.
