Another ques tion, if lime is needed, how much is needed. The true answers to these questions can only be found by a soil test. The soil testing laboratory in Raleigh will make a soil analysis and report the plant nutrients need ed for any crop or plants to be grown. Since last January 1 Chowan County people have had 823 soil samples tested at the laboratory in Raleigh. Forty-seven per cent of the reports indi cate no lime needed. Forty two per cent of the reports indicate a need for a half to one ton of lime per acre. Eleven per cent of the reports indicate a need for one and a half to over two tons of lime per acre. Insufficient lime in a soil is often a hidden hun ger which may not be de tected in the growing crop. Even reduced yields due to lime hunger may be attri buted to another cause such as weather. A low potash level likewise may not be detected. On the other hand overtiming may be detrimental. A soil analysis test is the best guide to deter mine lime and other plant food needs. Contact your County Extension Office for soil sampling materials and information. Plant A Tree: The man who plants a tree must first prepare the fruitful earth by removing turf and sod. He must cherish in his heart a silent prayer for he is working hand in hand with “God.” It is a sacred task to plant a tree and that should always be done on bended knee.—Mrs. John Griffin of Arkansas. A Gardener .Stops To Chat: Fred Lawton sez, “I’m just a common gard ener, guess I don’t amount to much. I work at plan tin’ things for folks, trees and flowers and the such. I’ve had the same wife 40 years. She seems content ed, too. Her brothers say I’m no success, but she likes what I do. "They’re both high-up executives, they’re rich ’cause they’ve worked hard. They tell my wife I fool too much with roses in my yard. I guess they are right, they’ve got good sense, especially Brother Bill. (He’s in the sana torium now, up there on Locust Hill). "I guess I’ll sit down here awhile, those clouds have caught my eye. I don’t remember see in’ any prettier colors in the sky. A sunset seems more beau tiful with clouds upon the wing ’n my wife says she likes sunsets more than any other thing. “Her brothers say I’m lazy ’cause I’m not the hustlin’ kind. They tell her I should change my job, but she don’t seem to mind. Why, Jim, he gets so mad at me sometimes he’ll hardly speak—(he’s out in Reno now—he brings his third wife home next week). Her brother Art, the nervous one, died in ’29. (Say, those pink roses by your fence, they’re most as nice as mine). He’s buried out in Roselawn where he hasn’t got a care. They say he was the wealthiest man was ever buried there. I’m proud to be related—l admire their great success. I nev er made much money and I never will. I guess. My wife don’t seem to want much, though, she says she just wants me. Well, I must get along now—say, I like your maply tree.” For The Family That Has ALMOST Everything!
