Earnhardt preached his first Sunday at Roper Methodist Church where he will be serving as pastor for the coming year. A fellowship dinner was held at the church in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Earnhardt. Steve Shoemaker went to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shoemaker in Florence, S. C. While visit ing his parents he attended the car races at Darlington Speedway. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Hassell of Hampton, Va., spent Mother’s Day with Mr. and Mrs. James Has sell. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Matthews of El Paso, visit ed with Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Jethro during the week. Dr. Archie Walker, Jr., spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Walker, Sr., in Wil mington, N. C. Mrs. Della Harrell visit ed several days in Hert ford with Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Matthews and Mrs. May Perry. Rev. D. E. Earnhardt was in a revival at Parkton United Methodist Church in Fayetteville on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Jethro of Hampton, Va., and Miss Juanita Jethro of Washington, D. C., spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. The meeting be gins at 7 o’clock. Miss Audrey Tuttle of Elizabeth City, district di rector of the N. C. Fed eration of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs will be here to install the new officers. Miss Edna Snell, presi dent, will preside. New officers to be in stalled include: Mrs. Beulah Boswell, president; Mrs. Ida Waff, first vice president; Mrs. Lena M. Leary, second vice president; Mrs. Ruth Shac kelford, recording secre tary; Mrs. Paula Hughes, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. Goldie L. Mack are spending this weekend in Richmond, Va., visiting Mr. Mack’s rela tives- Mr. Mack will also attend the 50th annivers ary reunion of the Class of 1919 at the University of Richmond, Honor Students Named By ECU GREENVILLE Nearly one in five East Carolina University students last winter made high enough grades to earn places on the official honor lists of the university. That 20 per cent of the students—a total of 2,019 got official commendation from the university as three honors lists were announced tnis week. Three from Chowan County made all “A’s”. They are: Linda A. Hollo well, Larry Calvin Parks and Gloria Ann Hollowell. Os those on the dean’s list, Chowan County stu dents were: Brenda Kay Bunch, and Charles M. As bell, Jr. Honor roll students in cluded: Sylvia L. Jordan, Charles Overton, 111, Bar bara Ann Wallace, Vivian Faye Whiteman, and Mary Farrah Privott. HI f \ i Bp- \ J.JPP DAVID COPELAND RONNIE ROGERSON Scholorships Are Set Eight students who will graduate next month from John A. Holmes High School have recently been notified of scholarships or grants. Mrs. Lane Kinion, guid ance director for Edenton- Chowan Schools, identified them as: David Copeland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Cope land, Morris Circle, has re cently been notified that he is a recipient of an aca demic scholarship at Wake Forest University, Winston- Salem for the Fall of 1969. A senior at John A. Holmes High School, David has been an outstanding mem ber of the band and very active in sports. He also represented the school at Boys’ State in 1968. Miss Amy O’Neal, daugh ter of Mrs. Jeanne O’Neal, Pembroke Circle, has been awarded an academic scholarship at Greensboro College. An outstanding member of her class, Amy has served as editor of the school paper this year. She has been very active in extra-curricula activities in high school. She plans to major in journalism at Greensboro College after graduation. Miss Sue Powell, a sen ior at Holmes High School, has recently been awarded the North Carolina Teach er’s Scholarship to attend East Carolina University at Greenville. A member of the National Honor Socie ty, Sue has been an out standing basketball player. She has also been very active in the Future Teach ers Club and other organi zations. She plans to ma jor in elementary educa tion. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Powell of Edenton. Clarence Stallings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stallings of Twiddy Ave nue, has received an aca demic scholarship to at tend Southeastern Business College in Durham. At Holmes High School, Clar ence has been an outstand ing member of the Glee Club. He has also served as an office assistant. He has been very active in the 4-H Club. He plans to major in accounting. Ronnie Rogerson has been awarded a scholarship and academic grant at the University of North Caro lina at Chapel Hill. Ron nie has been an outstand ing academic student in his class. Canny Earnhardt, son of Rev. and Mrs. Edwin Lea Earnhardt of Edenton, has been awarded a scholarship grant to attend East Caro lina for the fall of 1969. He is a member of the Na tional Honor Society at Holmes High. He plans to major in science. Miss Jane White, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney White of Edenton, has been awarded a scholarship to attend Albemarle School of Nursing. Jane has been very active in the Health Careers Club and the Fu ture Homemakers Club at Holmes High School. Michael Lynn Ervin has received an athletic grant to play football at East Ca rolina University in Green ville. Mike has been an outstanding student in foot ball, basketball and track at Holmes High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Ervin of Eden ton.
