PAGE TWO -A t BROAD STREET BULLETIN... By Kate There’s nothing'like the chatter Os a little girl of three, Or the questions she can ask me, As she laughs so merrily. Where is this and where is that? And why is it going to rain, Why do I have to go to bed? Answers I can’t explain. But each day I thank the Lord, For this little girl of three, Who in just a few short visits Has brought such joy to me. My son Martin, who has been visiting me this week, predicted that this column would be filled with noth ing but words about my small granddaughter, who is visiting here also. I’m just wondering if there could be a little green eyed jealousy around here. Just hope that Buff doesn’t start complaining. This is a good time of year to enjoy all the de licious fresh fruits and vegetables at their peak. It’s not very hard to plan menus around fresh snap beans, butter beans, beets, com, crowder peas, squash and new potatoes. Oh, and I forgot to mention the red ripe tomatoes, now in full harvest In fact, I canned a bushel of them this week, after which I was ready to collapse. However, when I know how much they’ll be en joyed, the hard work was worth it. Here is a recipe for wa termelon rind pickles, which I 'have used and had excellent results: 7 pounds rind. % cup lime (can be pur chased at drug store). Soak rind overnight in lime water. Cover with fresh water; boil 10 minutes and drain. Make a syrup of seven pounds sugar, two pints of vinegar, two tbsp. cloves, Would You Believe? A Few Hints After freezing fish as they come from the water, as many people do, they can be scaled easily by al lowing them to almost thaw, then scaling them under water with a tea spoon. If a screw breaks off in wood, drive it in further with a nail, fill the hole with plastic wood and then use a new screw. White Promoted By State Fair CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —Jerry D.
