Report From Washington
By Rep. Walter B. Jones
wc were assured that no final
decision had been reached,
but that one would be forth
coming.
This office shall continue
to do everything possible to
preserve the status quo of
the Cherry Point civilian
employment.
Last week President Pom
pidou of France addressed a
joint session of' Congress.
Due to the strained feelings
on the part of some of the
members toward the French
nation, Congressional attend
ance was somewhat light and
applause was less than en
thusiastic.
Within the last few days
the National Governors’ Con
ference convened here in
Washington. One of the basic
problems of today is the exo
dus of rural people to the
urban centers and the plight
of the small towns in trying
to provide housing and utili
ties to maintain and attract
their residents. In an effort
to come up with answers and
provide some relief, an ad
hoc committee composed of
nine Governors from the va
rious states and 18 members
of Congress, was created.
North Carolina Governor Bob
Scott is on the committee,
and I had the honor of be
ing chosen by the chairman
of the Agriculture Commit
tee, Bob Poage, to serve as
one of the Congressional
members. On Thursday last,
we met jointly and made
plans to try to seek a better
understanding of the prob
lems of rural and small town
citizens. If answers are to be
obtained, then it must take
THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, MARCH 5, UTB.
the joint efforts of both the
state and federal government.
In this connection, a recent
Farmers Home Administra
tion report revealed that
94.2 per cent of the loan re
cipients in 1969 were non
farm families. This is no cri
ticism of this statistics, for
most of the loans went to
residents of small towns
and cities as well as the
small municipalities them
selves. These percentage fig
ures might be due in part to
the exodus of farmers and
farm labor from the small
towns to the urban centers.
This trend must be reversed
if we are to maintain a bal
anced society and economy.
Former Edenton
Couple To Travel
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest L.
White, Jr., of Raleigh have
been awarded the Xerox
Corporation’s “Par Star Trip”
to Cocoyoc, Mex.
White, a sales representa
tive with the firm, was
awarded the trip for sales
achievement during 1969.
Departing from Raleigh on
March 10, Mr. and Mrs. White
will join other company em
ployees at the enchanting
mountain resort. While there,
day activities will consist of
sight-seeing excursions to
Mexico City, Taxco, and
Cuernavaca, shopping, horse
back riding, tennis, skeet
shooting, burro races, swim
ming and golf. Evenings will
include programs of Mexican
dancing, a spectacular fire
works presentation and ban
quets.
The Whites will return to
Raleigh on the evening of
March 15.
Going to church is a habit
everybody—even the wealthy
and elderly individual—
should nourish. Attended of
ten enough, something good
is sure to “take” as a result.
Nations lose their strength
when their leaders become
corrupt, either through self
seeking or self-conceit.
