College Names Honor Students Dr. Arthur Land, Dean of Instruction, at the College of 'The Albemarle in Elizabeth City, has announced the names of those students who made the Dean’s List for the quarter just ended. CONTEST Chandlers Win In W inston-Salem The Chandlers of Suffolk, Va., recently joined the North Carolina Professional Photo graphers Association because of the geographic closeness. They entered six prints in Competition at the state con vention recently held in Wins ton-Salem. All these prints were accepted for exhibition and received gold corners. Two prints received “Court of Honor” awards for su perior photography. James Chandler is shown above holding a sunset scene taken over the Nansemond River that received the high- James E. Bunch Taken In Death James Elliott Bunch, 59, of Suffolk, Va., died suddently March 24 at Obici Hospital in Suffoik. He was employed as a machinist with Ferguson Manufacturing Company. Mr. Bunch was a native of Gates County, born November 14, 1910, son of the late James Jethro and Addie Brown Bunch. He was married to Mrs. Lucy Dail Bunch, who sur vives. Also surviving is a son, James Wilbur Bunch of Whaley\ille, Va.; three daugh ters: Mrs. Earl Ray Farless of Edenton; Mrs. William E. McC enny of Chesapeake, Va.; and Mrs, -Horaee D. Gardner of Suffolk, Va.; three "broth ers: Daughtry Bunch of Ro per; Marion Bunch of Eden tcn; and Gordon Bunch of Plots, Neb.; two sisters: Mrs. William Temple, Jr., of Vir ginia Beach, Va.; and Mrs. Robert Francis of Edenton; and seven grandchildren. Funerafl services were held at Williford Memorial Chapel at 2 P. M., Friday with Rev. Virgil Wilson in charge. Bur ial was in Beaver Hill Ceme tery. Williford Funeral Home had lharge of arrangements. C. Wesleyan College here for the 1970 fall term. North Carolina Wesleyan, a fully accredited coeducational Methodist liberal arts college, is currently in its tenth year with an enrollment of 677 students from 20 states and four foreign countries. Southern Life Report Released Insurance in force of South ern Life Insurance Co., grew $ per cent in 1969 to a year end tqtal of 9977,600,115, ac cording to W. L. carter, Jr., president, in releasing the company’s annual report. Fig ures from the report show an insurance-in-force gain of $31,- 626,900, excluding the $3,- 839,000 decrease in the $70,- 066,000 totai servicemen's group life insurance in force. TotaH sales were listed at $106,763,185 for the year with $4,080,553 paid in benefits to policyowners and beneficiar ies, raising the accumulated total to $44,460,866 in benefits paid. C. Concert Artist At Area College ELIZABETH CITY The College of . the Albemarle announces the presentation of an internationally recog nized concert artist April 7 and 8. Georgi Riablkoff, young European pianist, has won in ternational fame and comes from a musical family relat ed to Tchaikovsky and Rach maninoff. He gave his first concert at the age of .four. During World War II and the terrible years of Nazi oc cupation he helped persecuted people and Jewish families to hide and escape death. Trap ped by the Gestapo, Riabi koff refused to reveal their hiding places. The Nazis, knowing he was a fine boy pianist, swore he should nev- 1 er play again and drove hot spikes through his palms, broke his arm and crushed his fingers. In spite of all, he did not betray these peo ple. He was rescued by British and U. S. troops and through faith, - determination and long agonizing practice he regain ed use of his hands and be gan to play again. Riabikoff is considered one of the most promising concert pianists and has played ex tensively through Europe and America. Area citizens aife invited to all events featuring Mr. Riabikoff.
