PAGE EIGHT-B Bartok Circus In Elizabeth City Arrangements have been completed for the Famous Circus Bartok, billed as the world’s greatest circus in-the round, to show in Elizabeth City on April 13, sponsored by Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Elizabeth City, accord ing to a statement made by Charles J. Malieswsk, presi dent The show grounds will be at National Guard Armory. The circus is the largest European style one-ring tent ed circus on tour. Circus in the-round is presented in one very large performing ring which is surrounded by a hippodrome track and every display can be seen from all seats in the huge big-top which accommodates more than 3,000 persons each per formance. The fast-moving perform ances feature a vast array of outstanding attractions from Pakistan, the land of 'mystics, to the far frozen tundra of Northern Russia. Stars from Peru, Mexico, Canada and the United States are also promi nent in the spectacular two hour program. Many of them are making a first appearance in the USA. Unusual per forming animals, including giant crocodiles from Pakis tan, big Russian bears, Siam ese goats and others are fea tured. The circus travels in three caravans of large motorized units. In the first section are horse tents, cookhouse, a power plant, menagerie and big-top layout department. The second section or caravan carries the big-top canvas, rigging, poles and more electrical plants and equip ment. The last section brings performing animals, grand stands, more performers’ rig ging and performers along with office personnel. Ac tivity starts as soon as each section comes to the show grounds. The precision of workmanship in the erection of this big portable audi torium seems to be accom plished only by experienced circus people in all depart ments. This operation is al most as attractive to many circus fans as the perform ance. The study shown is ol' Mrs. Robert L. Pippen, Jr., of Cary, the former Charlene Jones of Elizabeth City. Williams exhibited five prints, placing three in the Court of Honor and winning the second place trophy for “illustrative" direct color photography with a study of a P-51 Mustang. One portrait ex hibited was a debutante study of Miss Dale Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. .1. I). Elliott of 112 West Gale Street, Edenton. Williams’ “pictorial'' direct color study of the Navy’s "Blue Angels" was one of the highest scoring photographs in the show of 400 prints. Print chair man Pete Comer said Williams has earned first, second and third of “best in the state’’ in addition to many Court of Honor awards since joining the association five years ago. A bait often overlooked by fishermen is the fresh-water shrimp of which there are more than 41 varieties. It is an unusually effective bait, but it is far from durable.— : ! f : > ?EESS9H(BRE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Continued from Page 8 But the Church cannot afford to stop growing; it must meet the demands of per sons, of the times, of its own dedicated precepts. It must meet and answer the chal lenge—and emerge victorious. No church and no member of that church can afford to settle back and say: “Work is done.” For Christ’s work is never done—just as Christ Himself is never absent from the lives of those who wil lingly accept Him. Peter was renewed in Christ; we, too, can be so re newed, if we will but sur render ourselves to His will and be instruments empower ed for witnessing—both as in dividuals and as members of the Church. Thus we have this administration, after trumpeting the horns for sev eral days for a greatly ex panded attack on our envir onmental problems, abolish ing the greatest program the world has ever seen in this field. Inaugurated in 1936, the ACP has engaged literally millions of farmers to work in concert with their govern ment in protecting our great est natural resources our soil and water. Eliminating the runoff of millions of tons of top soil, as testified to by soil con servation ' experts, has not only kept the soil where it can feed future generations but has greatly reduced the pollution of the nation’s wa terways. Planting of literally billions of trees has brought about a better ecological bal ance which had been endang ered by wanton overcutting. It can be safely stated that almost no federal dollar has returned so much to both the treasury and the national welfare as the insignificant sums (when compared to the gross national product), spenflj j I through the agricultural con-* / ' j servation program. Hopefully, the Congress will pay no more attention to this budget request than they have to several others re questing either complete elimination or drastic curtail. ment of the ACP in recent years. However, those who recog nize the value of the agricul tural conservation program must not assume this will be done.
