Five years later Meekins discovered the whereabouts of the dog and demanded its return. Simp son refused to return the dog, contending that Meekins had waited too long to assert own ership of the dog. May Meek ins recover the dog in a legal proceeding? Yes. Lost or stolen proper ty may be recovered by the true owner wherever it is found. It may be recovered from even an innocent pur chaser. < Simpson was a finder of lost property. He was a bai lee of property that belonged to another. A finder or other bailee cannot acquire owner ship of property under the doctrine of adverse possession. In this particular case, Meekins has three years from the date of the demand and refusal within which to start an action for the recovery of the dog. • * • Suppose Simpson had as serted a claim of sixty dollars for the keep and care of the dog. Would Meekins be able to recover his dog without paying to Simpson the sixty dollars? Yes. The Supreme Court of North Carolina has held that the owner of a lost dog can recover it from a finder without paying to him any thing for its care and keep. Although there are times when a finder may recover from the owner in a separate action for the necessary and reasonable expenses incurred in the successful recovery and preservation of lost property, he has no lien therefor. The finder cannot continue to keep the lost property until his claim is paid. He has a claim, not a lien. • » • Suppose the lost bird dog gives birth to puppies shortly before Simpson discovers the whereabouts of his dog. May Simpson recover from Meek ins both the dog and the puppies? Yes. Hie owner of a fe male animal automatically be comes the owner of any off spring bom to his animal dur ing his ownership. The pup pies are accessions to property owned by Simpson. Camp Cook Likes Her Gas Range A holiday in the great outdoors needn’t mean constant cook outs. SS Wants Brides’ Names Girls getting married this June might not think of send ing a wedding announcement to their social security office. But the Social Security Administration would like to know the bride’s new name as soon as possible. Up-to date records are important if earnings are to be recorded properly and without delay. These earnings records will help to determine how much is paid some day in retire ment, survivors, or disability benefits. Records which are incomplete or incorrect can result in delay or even in re duction of amounts payable. Today’s bride could re ceive social security payments long before she and her hus band reach retirement age. More than 8 million Ameri cans under 65 now get regular monthly checks. An automobile accident that disables a young husband or his wife could set the social Security wheels in motion. With as little as IVi years of work under social security including credit for part-time and summer jobs benefits could be paid to the family of a young man or young woman. As the family grows, it is possible that one of the chil dren may become disabled before the age of 18. If he is still disabled when one of his parents starts getting retire ment or disability benefits or dies, he can get monthly pay ments for as long as he is disabled perhaps the rest of his life. u LT. Check on Pipes , Drains Can Help To Prevent Tree Root Troubles Plan to buy a new home this summer? Make sure that the underground pipes and drains are of durable, water tight material. Tree roots “instinctively” spread in the direction of nearby water. Once there’s a leak or break in inferior pip ing, destructive roots will in vade it and clog the line, notes the Plumbing-Heating- Cooling Information Bureau. Cleaning out clogged lines can be a complex and expen SECTION C sive proposition, depending, of course, upon the extent of the damage, the location of the pipe and other factors. The most effective method, which requires the knowl edge and tools of a plumbing contractor, is cutting out the roots with a flexible auger that can be reeled into the lines. The contractor also has special root solvents that can be flushed through the lines to retard further growth.
