PAGE 2-A HOOTS .-.This past week I spent two ’ days in Lumberton at the first of four workshops given across the state by a com mittee of which I am co-chair man— the in-service training '•committee of the Public Li braries Section of the N. C. .Library Association (NCLA). A great deal of planning was done by the committee and ■.it is pleasant to report that all went well. Two outstanding speakers :-appeared in Lumberton for this occasion: Mrs. Margaret Harper, a former candidate • ; for lieutenant governor, who is a library trustee in her home town of Southport, and : Sam Ragan, the secretary of the 'Department of Art, Cul ture and History. Mrs. Har per stressed the importance of improving the library image iby concentrating on how we communicate with the public. As she pointed out, “It is not . only what we say that counts ;it is how we say it. Non-ver bal communication—our whole —is most important.” Mr. Ragan’s remarks were ■given at a banquet and he was entertaining as well as .informative. The State Li brary is only one of the 39 agencies included in his de partment but it was plain to isee that he will be an elo quent advocate for ever bet ter libraries in the state. We were interested to hear his account of the reactivation of the Sir Walter HJleigh Conr hiission (money collected from rschool children 70 years ago Jo build a statue of Raleigh is still waiting to be spent- and bf his latest assignment —to build u fence around the grandpappy holly tree in the State. Imagine our delight (and feelings of pan ic) when 80 pre-registered and 1 over 100 people showed up for the first one. The hostess librarian, Mrs. Betsey Par mele of the Robeson County Library, rose nobly to the challenge and there were no real problems. This was the first conference ever attended for many of the librarians present, including many book mobile librarians. Since there was lots of discussion time planned, much interchange of ideas took place. The next two sessions are being held in Hendersonville and Asheboro, so I will be traveling to the western and central parts of the state next 'week. The final workshop for the eastern section of the state will be held in Roan oke Rapids on September 28 and 27.
