The award was presented to the Hertford office in rec ognition of the outstanding "Public Information Program” by a county office unit within the FHA district for the per iod July 1 through June 30, resulting in a greater public awareness of the Farmers Home Administration services and thereby improved living conditions for its farmers and rural residents. The Hertford office is staff ed by Melvin Howell, county supervisor; Mrs. Inez Sawyer, county office clerk; Mrs. Ida H. Newbern, assistant county office clerk; O. Waldo Wins low, assistant county super visor and Jacob Stafford, con struction inspector. The of fice serves Chowan, Perquim ans, Pasquotank. Camden and Currituck counties. Other counties in the dis trict competing for the award were Gates, Hertford, Bertie, Martin, Washington, Tyrrell and Dare. The Hertford unit will be competing against 10 other district winners for a state award to be announced later. Farmers Home Administra tion in North Carolina insti tuted this awards program this past fiscal year as a means of stimulating more effective public information programs by its 73 counlv of fices and to recognize out standing efforts by county of fice staffs. Jackson Church-Going Last Sunday G. Douglas Tlsc, acting superintendent of Bandon Chapel, announced that In November ‘there will be two guest ministers to preach: Rev. Bennie Crawford of Edenton (Baptist) on the first Sunday, November 5; Dr. William J. B. Livingston of Hampton, Va. (Presby terian) on the third Sunday, November 19. The hour for church service begins at 11 A. M. 1 Ever faithful and efficient teacher of the junior Sunday School classes is Mrs. G. Douglas Tise (Evelyn) who welcomes all of the younger group in fellowship hall. Thomas Frederick Smith of Portsmouth, Va., and Arrow head Beach, gave the lesson for the adult Sunday School class at 9:45 A. M. His sub ject, ‘The Sinful Exploitation of Race.” Bryant Kent Rowley of Portsmouth, Va., and Arrow head Beach, led the singing, with Mr. Smith at the piano and Mrs. H. Truston Bunting (Margaret) at the organ. Mr. Rowley will teach the adult Sunday School class and Mrs. Gus H. Perry (Myrtis) will play the organ. The subject: "Freedom Under Authority,” Next class meeting at 7:30 o’clock, in the hall, is on No vember 7. It is open to all interested in Bandn Chapel. Party-Going On Friday night fellowship hall fairly bounced with some 50-60 (who could count?) as sorted unguessablcs, the ma jority by far, so well dis guised. Prizes went to G. Douglas Tise, Mrs. Fred W. Jolly (Eve lyn) and little Miss Suzanne Carol Rountree, as most orig inal at the time of the judg ing at 6:30 P. M. A production number, ‘The Miss America Pageant” saw Mrs. Alfred J. Church (jeanne) as the star, accom panied by the former queen. Mrs. Willis O. Schie (Grace) and in lieu ot Bert Parks, Willie N. Waters was master of ceremonies. There never was more fun generated than those "hams” produced un less it was when “Moms Mo bile” straddled in, a perfect characterization of the TV personality. (Name withheld to protect the fun - loving mimic). Chairman of the whole evening, Mrs. Willie N. Wat ers (Louise) said that when she attended church, “It was so hard to recognize the pret ty faces on Sunday, having seen such weird ones on Fri day night. Everybody en joyed the delicious food and through Christian love and fellowship, one can always have the best o.f times.” The next covered dish sup per at 6:30 November 17, the Friday before Thanksgiving. Carroll Jones recently took the Girl Scouts on a guided tour in rooms of the Armory not usually seen by everyone. One of the rooms was the supply room, where he demonstrated the gas masks, radios and telephone.-. The gills went into the guns and ammunition room and to the motor pool. Sgt. Jones told the troop about the POW and MIA bracelet. He gave each of Wood To Head Episcopal Drive J. Gilliam Wood has been selected _as chairman of the Every Member Canvass for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edenton for the 1973 cam paign now being conducted tnroughout the Diocese of F.aslern North Carolina. Co-chairmen are P. Byron Kehaycs and Dr. Allen L. Hornthal, who are now pre paring for “C-Day" known as Canvass Day, Commitment Day and Christ’s Day. A parish pot-luck supper is planned for November a when Rev. James Horton and members of his Young Churchmen who rendered vol unteer services in Grenada, West Indies, this summer, will be guest speakers. The Every Member Can vass is set for November 12 and will feature telecast from 11 A. M. lo 11:30 A. M. over WTAR, WITN and WECT tele vision stations. This will be a forthright report to the people of the Diocese combin ed with a tribute to Bishoo Thomas H. Wright, retiring bishop of the diocese. A Corporate Communion and canvassers’ breakfast is planned to begin the canvass with a coffee hour following the service November 12, en abling parishioners to pledge at that time. WCDJIsAid To Girl Scouts Usually the Girl Scouts get praises for doing good deeds. This time it’s the North Caro lina broadcasters who deserve the praise for doing a good deed for the Girl Scouts. The University of North Carolina Television Network is sponsoring and coordinating a statewide project to help Cadctte Scouts earn their ra dio TV badges. A broadcast facility tour is the first badge requirement. WCDJ came lo the aid of the Girl Scouts by offering to give tours of their studio to the Scouts in Eden ton. After completing the badge requirements, the Cadettes involved in the project will write television scripts on Girl Scouting. These scripts will be judged and two winners selected. The winning troops will be invited to a University Television studio to produce their program for a special during Girl Scout Week.
